Included in the book are copies of ceremonies such as the gauntlet ceremony, various collaring ceremonies and the ultimate cover ceremony of Jeffrey Alan Payne, IML 2009. This book is not meant to be the bible of protocols but the documented history of my life with the "Old Guard" protocols that I personally can attest to through my journey. It will define the various leather titles and how they were achieved during those early days in "Old Guard". Much of this book has never been written about but only talked and fantasized about. Now, here is the documentation of what I lived for all to learn from. It tells of the hierarchy that once existed among the leather organizations. I discuss how to train a boy and how the "Old Guard" shows respect even to today's title holders and events. It also explains many of the military to leather protocols and compares them so all can understand how and why they existed. Since those early days of leather many things have changed. We lost so much of our history due to the HIV, HEP C and the Crystal Meth eras. For the first time we now have it all in one place with references to those early days by someone who has survived to write about it. About the Author
Master John has been actively involved with the BDSM Lifestyle for over 45 years. He started serving Master Richard in true Old Guard ways in the Castro in the early 70's.

Master John was Honorary Member of the Year 2008 by the SFLBC. He was a principle in Daddy's Closet located in Wilton Manors, Fl. and hosts the website: www.DungeonAcademy.com. He was the publisher and editor of the Leather Link, a publication of leather events and stories etc., in the Ft Lauderdale area. He is a past member of the Florida NLA, Ft Lauderdale, Fl. He is a past sponsor of the ILSb (International Leather Sir boy) contest regionally and in 2009 and 2010 was a feature presenter and educator for ILSb in San Francisco.

Actively involved in educating our community through Mr. S, LeatherWerks, SFLBC, Leather University, Mens Academy, ILSb, and S.P.I.C.E., his educational focus embraces both gay and pansexual lifestyles. He is a voting member and contributor to the Leather Archives. He is an experienced judge at many contests globally. Master John co-chairs Leather Title Holders Sunday at the M.C.C. Sunshine Cathedral annually in Ft. Lauderdale. a leather fairytale

If costume theater and playacting are your thing -- Civil War reenactments, Renaissance Faire stuff, flying monsters on Gor, naked people kneeling or mashing their butts or faces into the floor -- then this is the book for you. Skip over the chapters in which the author blatantly fabricates his own past, along with San Francisco leather's, and you may really enjoy his fertile imagination as applied to the sillier superficies of leather.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in how San Francisco leather was actually lived, and by whom, then save your money for Gayle Rubin's long-awaited THE VALLEY OF THE KINGS, to be published in 2013.

Total and utter garbage.

This author took protocols and practices that are done today and wrote a made up history about how those same practices were passed down exactly as they are by a secret society of gay WWI and WWII veterans that somehow all knew each other. This "secret council of elders" approves and disapproves of members and Controlled ceremonies and rankings of the players involved.

The piles of leather history we have from people who were actually there. The Doctoral dissertations form scholars and the tons and tons of artifacts in the Leather Archives and Museum Located in Chicago Illinois paint and VASTLY different picture.

In the early 90's the heterosexual bdsm community was looking for validation as many turned away form the recorded historical fact that that segment of the community was birth through erotic photography and the underground pedaling of pornography as evident by the doctrinal dissertation piece The Development of Sadomasochism as a Cultural Style in the Twentieth-Century United States by Robert Bienvenu . So many people fell victim to a fictional romanticized origins story of secret underground torture houses that were made In Europe and transferred to the United States and that were so secret in fact that NOT ONE shred of evidence exist to this day of there EVER being such a thing. This was later debunked and all the supposed leaders and heirs to these fictional houses had to fess up that is was all a fantasy or disappeared clinging to the next fictional history to subscribe to to valid why their band of BDSM is so much better, superior, and worth of being paid to demonstrate then the people who actually paid their dues, are skilled in what they teach and have ACTUALLY credible experience to back up what they preach.

This Author is targeting people who don't know any better and trying to pass his fiction off as fact. Thorough Pattern Instructions, but Needs More Concision

This book has a lot of good ideas for putting together personal items and things for the home - it's great for handmade gift-giving! I have made a few of the projects, including the bedside organizer and the quilted tote and they came together beautifully. However, the instructions often held me back by their extreme detail. Over-explaining every step can be frustrating for both beginner and advanced sewist alike. I started using this book right after I first began to sew and found the verbose instructions to be really intimidating, even on basic projects. Every stitch is explained to the point that there can be no confusion. This is good....but now as a fairly advanced seamstress, I still find them to be intimidating and hampering. I constantly have to read and reread each paragraph, feeling that I am missing something. For the last project I did, I just abandoned the instructions altogether and finished the project on my own knowledge of sewing.

Also, as a quilter, the patchwork blanket piecing seems a bit overly complicated in that the quilt isn't pieced in the traditional manner, and uses way more fabric than necessary. I don't think the blanket would wear evenly over time.

In all, very well constructed patterns but they scream for concision.

DO NOT BUY KINDLE EDITION!!!!

I wanted to make the lounge pants in here and was looking forward to easy sewing. To my surprise there was no pattern in this book. There are apparently patterns that come with the physical book, but were not included in the Kindle edition, not even measurements that you could draw yourself. I quickly scanned through the book to see if there were any other patterns for projects and there weren't. What is the point of this book if you don't have patterns to use or directions to follow to make your own. Save yourself the hassle and don't get the Kindle version!

Not what I expected, but worth having

I am still a beginner when it comes to sewing. Sure, I've made a few throw pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, lounge pants, and a few other very simple projects. But this book seems to be for a much more advanced group of people. The projects are very, very cute but there are so many steps that each one seems daunting. I might attempt a simpler version, but I'd rather the book were simpler. I feel that putting the word "simple" on the cover is a bit misleading. The photography is beautiful, and there are several projects that I'm still going to attempt. The Kitty Tunnel is intriguing, and I appreciate the fact that it's so detailed. The lounge pants from Sewing Green are much simpler than these, and require elastic- which I feel is more comfortable. I like the bedside organizer- useful and simple. There's a canvas hanging toiletry bag, which should actually be made from waterproof material to be useful. The kimono-style bathrobe is very cute, but I'd make it much longer. Who needs a bathrobe that barely covers your rear? The checkbook clutch organizer is also very tempting, but another project that doesn't really qualify as "simple". It definitely doesn't look home-made. This book is for those ready to graduate to more time-consuming projects. It contains very detailed instructions and illustrations, but the print is quite small. Overall, I'm glad I have it, even though it's somewhat advanced.

I started the Ted Reed books back in the sixties (Syncopation, Solos and Fill ins Vols I and II). They are a must have for any drum student. It teaches how to play a nice sounding four bar drum solo.

Gems seem to be moving to the literary forefront, with The Hope Diamond out in May and The Heartless Stone: A Journey through the World of Diamonds, Deceit and Desire due in August. In her follow-up to Color, Finlay looks at diamonds and eight more of the world's most coveted gemstones. In each chapter, she discusses the jewel's history and travels to the stone's place of origin: abandoned emerald mines in Egypt, working opal mines in Australia, a pearl-fisher's home in Scotland and an Apache reservation that holds most of the world's supply of peridot. Finlay is also fascinated by the lengths to which people will go to fabricate jewels: one company manufactures diamonds from cremated human remains. While each journey holds its own charms—Finlay's trek to Sri Lanka to uncover the pedigree of a family heirloom sapphire is particularly enjoyable—they don't fully gel into a cohesive whole, and detailed stories about, say, the way one Japanese entrepreneur transformed the world's pearl market are juxtaposed with historical trivia. Sparkling History

"It is an ordinary gemstone," writes Victoria Finlay of the sapphire in a ring given to her by her parents, "yet like most other ordinary gemstones it has a good story to tell, if you go looking for it." Go looking she does, not only for the story of that sapphire but for those of other gems, and yes, she found good stories and writes them up in _Jewels: A Secret History_ (Ballantine Books). Indeed, she values the stories more than the stones' rarity, perfection, or size. She set out to tell stories of nine different stones, from semi-precious to precious, and from two to ten on the Mohs hardness scale. The scale, invented in 1825 by mineralogist Freidrich Mohs, simply rates stones and other substances by what they can scratch and what scratches them; talc rates a one and diamond, the hardest substance known, rates a ten. Finlay ranges her chapters from softest stone to hardest: amber (Mohs somewhere between gypsum 2 and calcite 3), through jet, pearl, opal, peridot, emerald, sapphire, ruby, and finally diamond. (It is interesting that value tends to increase with hardness, indicating that we place a premium on durability.) Even the biggest stones, Finley notes, are objects that are really rather small, but the stories encompass great swaths of human history and technical expertise.

I will mention here only her quest for amber, for which she visits the Polish Baltic coast, a source for the stone. You may know the sticky sap that is oozed out when a pine tree is injured, and amber is the fossilized version of the same thing. Its origin is mysterious, because for amber to have become the geologic deposit as it is now found, huge numbers of evergreens (the species of tree is no longer with us) must have been hit with some sort of disease or other stress. Amber is the stuff that entrapped the mosquito that had dined on the blood of the dinosaur which yielded the DNA to build the monsters of the movie Jurassic Park. Its prices rose sharply when that movie came out in 1993, demonstrating our whimsical notions of value. Finlay goes to the University of Gdansk where is located the Museum of Amber Inclusions, and a guide indeed shows her insects trapped within. There is a particularly strange sample that looks like a long fly, only it has twelve legs; it turns out to be two flies caught by the sap during copulation. She attends the Amber-Washing Championships at Jantar, Poland, in the expectation that she would even herself be able to wade into the sea to fish out amber with the rest of the competitors, but finds that the sea no longer easily yields this treasure. Competitors on the beach were looking for amber pieces as big as shirt buttons planted by the organizers. "The whole thing was as exhilarating as a grape-peeling competition" she grumbles. The local supply of amber comes from a mine in an ex-Soviet Gulag "even bleaker than I had expected." It is a constant theme: gems may sparkle, full of richness, but the areas from which they are extracted are grimly impoverished.

Finlay has mined the historic literature for good stories; her debunking of the story of the curse of the Hope Diamond, for instance, is hilarious. She has also gone to the countries involved with each gem, and literally descended into the mines. She has funny stories, like being in a taxi stalled for an elephant parade in Sri Lanka (elephant parades are good for the sapphire business, as such a gem that has been worn on an elephant tusk is believed to have been blessed by Buddha himself). She has undergone no small amount of risk on these excursions. She has skillfully interviewed sometimes reticent subjects within the mines or within the business of bringing jewels to market, and employs judiciously the colorful anecdote. The historic and social results of our fascination for these useless rocks ("You can't eat them, you can't read them, you can't shelter under them ..." she quotes a Burmese taxi driver as saying) are on display here, as colorful and surprising as any of the gems themselves.

Jewels - Not Only for Jewel Lovers

For anyone who is interested in the fascinating story of some of the worlds most popular types of jewels, this book is for you. For anyone who is interested in visiting little know and remote parts of our planet, this book is for you. For anyone who is interested in better understanding why people are mesmerized by beautiful objects and why other people undertake dangerous jobs to find them, this book is for you.

The author not only shares the fascinating history of how these jewels have been used throughout history but she tells the even more fascinating story of those who make their livings finding and selling them. Ms Finlay has not let distance or danger inhibit her desire to see first hand where the gems come from and to speak with those who spend, and often risk, their lives in their pursuit. Their stories are as interesting and varied as the stones themselves. Like Patrick Leigh Femor and other top travel writers, this author seems to be able to put almost anyone at ease and entice them to tell her their stories with amazing candor. She has then been able to blend historical facts and current circumstances into a really fascinating read.

For me, her quest was really to better understand why jewels which, while beautiful, are basically useless command so much time, effort and even in some cases human lives in their production. After reading this book I believe that each person will be able to form their own answer to this question.

So, um ... Do you sell pressed-talc engagement rings?

JEWELS is one of those delicious volumes you read for the pure pleasure of acquiring esoteric knowledge that has no practical, everyday use. Similar books I've read that come to mind include Salt: A World History, PURE KETCHUP PB, Robbing the Bees: A Biography of Honey--The Sweet Liquid Gold that Seduced the World, and Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries. If someone has penned a narrative entitled WIRE COAT HANGERS, I'd read that too if the subject was made interesting. (There isn't; I checked.)

Author Finlay's approach is to discuss nine gemstones, three "organic" and six mineral, in the order of their position on Mohs' Scale of Relative Hardness. They are, listed by increasing hardness: amber, jet, pearl, opal, peridot, emerald, sapphire, ruby, and diamond. (On Mohs' scale, talc occupies position #1, i.e. the softest. My wife treasures her pressed talc engagement ring.)

Finlay, a social anthropologist turned journalist, is no desk-bound researcher. To write JEWELS, the story of the various gems' sources and evolution in societal value systems, she traveled the world: Kaliningrad Oblast (Russian Federation), northern England, Japan, Australia, Arizona, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and, perhaps the hardest to access, Antwerp's Diamond Club. The book begins with European, Asian, Japanese, and Australian "treasure" maps. Indeed, on asking what to look out for prior to visiting the remote site of Cleopatra's emerald mines in Egypt's desolate interior mountains, she was told, "Scorpions."

JEWELS contains an 8-page section of color photos as well as a liberal sprinkling of black and white snaps and illustrations. Oddly, it's the color section that comes up short, a fact which compels me to award 4 stars to what would otherwise be a five-star effort. Only examples of amber, pearl, opal, and diamond are pictured. There is no display of jet, peridot, emerald, sapphire, or ruby; I, an ignoramus when it comes to the topic, had to resort to the Internet. And there are no photos of two of the largest and most famous diamonds of history specifically mentioned in the text: the Cullinan(s) and the Golden Jubilee. Moreover, the Hope Diamond is given visual short-shrift considering its fame.

JEWELS concludes with a 19-page, perhaps useful "Miscellany of Jewels", which includes a glossary of terms, color scale and clarity terms for diamonds, a listing of American state gemstones, popular vs. mineral names for gemstones, Mohs' Scale, and a listing of birthstones. "Miscellany" is certainly the operative term.

Victoria's narrative is instructive and entertaining from start to finish. Except for the deficiency mentioned, one could hardly ask for more.

Arguing with Everything

This book starts with the standards of rhetoric laid down by Aristotle over two milennia ago. It explains the kinds, purposes, and conventions of classical argument in a vernacular English that contemporary teachers will be able to expound upon, and students will be able to comprehend. In essence, it brings Aristotle up to date without losing the unity that makes him worth studying to this day.

Unfortunately, only a small number of the chapters contain any examples of how this works in actual usage. To be really useful, this book needs readings. There is a larger edition with actual examples of rhetoric in use, but I naively thought my students would be happier with a slimmer, less expensive volume. Shame on me. I found myself running around all hell to breakfast, trying to find articles and essays that would exemplify the rules and notions of rhetoric for my students, hoping what I found (often on the fly) would actually be useful.

I like the layout and arrangement of this book. As far as it's useful, it's also informative and enlightening. But the more expanded version ought to be more useful to freshman composition students. Next semester, I will have my students buy the more expensive "with readings" edition, which will make my life easier, and theirs too, since they won't have to keep track of all my hasty photocopies.

A Solid Resource for Persuasive Writing

This book is designed to be an undergraduate-level textbook in persuasive writing. I read the book to see if I wanted to use it as a textbook for one of my classes. I think it's a very good textbook.

Part One introduces the types of arguments and various forums, as well as introducing the importance of context in persuasive writing -- it really matters who you are speaking to.

Part two covers the specific kinds of arguments in depth - arguments from the heart (humor and emotion), and those based on character, values, and facts.

Part Three is the meatiest portion of the book, addressing the structure of arguments, such as Toulmin analysis, arguments of definition, evaluation, cause, proposals, and humor.

Part Four deals with the style used in perfecting one's argument in written language, visual presentation, and spoken performances.

Part Five is shorter and discusses issues related to evidence, fallacious arguments (such as ad hominem attacks or slippery slope arguments), and intellectual property issues.

I like the clear writing style of the book and the informative explanation. The best part of the book, however, is the excerpts and examples. They are modern, relevant, engaging, and the students will enjoy reading and analyzing them. The chapter on Fallacies of Argument was also very strong, as well as the issues related to evidence.

Some things I did not like were the review questions at the end, some of which seemed ambiguous and overly time-consuming. Also, though the title is catchy, I do not accept that EVERYTHING is an argument -- the "Buckle-up" sign on the highway is just a sign.

That being said, I think EAA can be used as an effective textbook if certain sections are used instead of the entire book. Also, more in-depth analysis of Toulmin arguments might be examined in other sources, as it is treated somewhat lightly here. Overall, however, it can be a strong resource to help teach persuasive writing.

An encyclopedia hiding inside a textbook

This college textbook is in its fourth edition - doubling in size from 300 to 600 pages. The extensive index makes it useful as an auxiliary resource or even a stand alone.
The work is an encyclopedia on the subject of rhetoric. It is the first work on the subject that I have seen that includes `signifying' - a humorous style of African-American argument. In addition it includes the bones of a research handbook and the basics of Strunk & White. Unfortunately, it fails the Strunk & White goal of brevity. Making up for this in a great way is the section on citing almost every kind of resource in the MLA style. Even today there are MLA handbooks that omit instructions on how to cite articles that skip pages, how to quote from indirect pages or many other media other than print. The format is intensely visual which speaks well to the image rich environment in which we live. Visuals are key to instructing but shorten the life span of the work. In ten years, will a photo of Lil' Kim create the same learning opportunity as it does today? The book has a companion website which provides check lists for writing and research that are also covered in the book. The website checklists are much easier to use. Typically colleges do not include textbooks in their collections, but I would argue that this is one to break the rules for because of its high usefulness as a stand alone resource.
