James and Stephanie's story is not to be missed!

"Why have I never seen her before and why can't I take my eyes off her? I feel like I'm under some sort of spell, drawn in by a force I can't explain but not wanting to fight it at all. It's not lust; it's something else."

I FLOVE JAMES AND STEPHANIE!!!

They each had their own story to tell. Inside those stories were tragedies and regret. I was pulled in from the beginning and couldn't stop reading!

Stephanie witnessed something no one should ever watch! It altered her life forever, but with tragedy can come redemption. And that would be in the form of a very tall, very handsome stranger one chance night.

James aka Runt lived a life of work and family. Never room for romance, or even a fling. He is keeping a painful past locked away and doesn't want it to be let out. Until one day when he knows that his life is about to change forever. But is he ready?

"You deserve to be worshiped every day. You are exquisite."

I love how this book tells two stories that eventually come together as one. They each are struggling, not only with the past, but the feelings they aren't sure about. JA Hensley was able to make this happen by making these characters so easy to love and root for!

You also catch up with some friends from Stronger With Him, and some new ones in the form of Runt's big brothers...all four of them!! Each adding their own mix into the story. I would love to read each of their stories, but I know that's a stretch.....*hint hint wink wink* ;)

I loved every minute of this book! The storyline, the characters, the backstory...it's all wonderful!

A fast read that will make you laugh, fan yourself, will tug on your heartstrings, and bring tears to your eyes.

Stronger With Her just got better and better the longer I read it! It sucked me in and was so hard to put down. It was a fantastic read and I can't wait to read the first book or any other books that Ms. Hensley will hopefully write in her Stronger series!

I loved Stephanie's personality! She's a sweet girl, but she's also sassy, she's strong but she has her weak moments, and she really doesn't let people walk all over her, especially James. I really loved Stephanie, but I will admit that I got mad at her for a little while when she was on the outs with James, but in the end, I was glad that she made him work for her because she deserved to have him fight to keep her.

And of course I loved James, I mean, how could you not? He's amazing, sexy, sweet, smart, and a good listener. I loved how protective, possessive, and determined he was. James was willing to do whatever he had to do to keep his girl and I couldn't have asked for a better hero or loved him any more than I do!

Stronger With Her is fast read that will make you laugh, fan yourself, will tug on your heartstrings, and bring tears to your eyes. It will pull your emotions out so strongly you might be surprised. It's a beautiful, excellent read and I really loved and enjoyed it!!

Stronger With Her is a standalone, it's told from James and Stephanie's POV, and they get their HEA!

I always fall hardest for the "Runt" of the litter

This is the second in the series, but can absolutely be read as a standalone. I jumped out of order and I was not lost in any way.

I loved James and Stephanie. They have both had tragic events happen in their lives. They may not want them to or try to hide them, but they define them. Decisions are made and walls are built up to protect their hearts.

Well....the heart wants what it wants and James is ready. Ready to move on and become stronger. Will he be stronger with her?

This is a first read for me from J.A. Hensley and it will not be my last. There is a nice flow to her writing style and characters that I felt invested in and wanted to get to know better. Maybe...just maybe I will get to peep in on more of these sexy brothers that James has in future stories.

Hauntingly Beautiful Love Story!!!!

Blood and Salt is an incredibly captivating and compelling romantic horror love story. I was at the edge of my seat hungry for more. From the first page, I was hooked. Kim Liggett's Blood and Salt is the perfect read if you are hunting for a haunting and chilling horror romance. A dead girl always haunts Ashlyn Larkin. Ash finds out this girl is tied to her because of her mother's history in Quivira, Kansas. Ash ends up leaving her home in NYC with her twin brother to return to the spiritual commune her mother once lived in.

Ash and Rhys are twins and they are complete opposites of each other. Ash is daring, curious and competitive. Rhys is cautious and likes to follow everything by the books. There are a couple of twists and turns that I thought worked well in the book. I love the flashback memories that Ash has throughout the whole novel. It helps complete the story and ties the past with the present and future. The intricate history of Quivira definitely interested me. All I can think of is Vampire Diaries and the love triangle between Qetsiyah, Silas and Amara. The promise to be immortal between two people is not promised between the intended and someone is angry and wants revenge. The villagers of Quivira remind of the Travelers. Both live in a cult like world.

Liggett's descriptive words are hauntingly beautiful. She also adds a bit of comedy through Rhys and weaves magic within the a Village like society. Five hundred years will unravel due to the ultimate sacrifice of love!

I would definitely suggest reading this novel for the month of October. You will definitely be craving for more. Liggett's words bewitch the reader and you will be scared to turn off the light. For some readers, I highly suggest not reading this book at night. I cannot guarantee that you will have nightmares or be creeped out.

Kim Liggett steps into the world of YA in a HUGE way. This book is pure perfection. The characters, the story, the dialogue, ETC! I've got so much to say, so I'm just going to dive in-

The characters you meet in the beginning of the book will be completely changed by the end of the book. There's nothing wrong with that, not at all, that's great character arcs and development in play there.

The story blew my mind! If you've read my reviews before, you'd know that the books that completely rip the rug out from underneath me are my favorite kinds of books and this one absolutely did that. This story grabbed that rug, pulled it, and kept dragging it! Incredible! I was so impressed with the building of the story - it was a steady build until things got crazy and it was fabulous; almost like a firework - climbing, climbing, climbing, KABOOM.

The imagery in this book is hauntingly beautiful. Scenes are so vivid in your head as you're reading. This book has a considerable amount of gore and that mixture of gore and vivid imagery is completely OK with me. *Thumbs Up Emoji* Her descriptions and her metaphors are gold. I fell in love with Kim's writing from page one. Her metaphors are really something to watch out for because they are perfect.

Gosh, I'm sorry this is a love fest, but seriously this book is incredible. This is one of those books that makes me think I'm being too frivolous when I hand out five star book reviews. This book doesn't compare - I wish I could give it ten stars. Watch out for my Best Books of 2015 - This might have topped the list!

I loved this book. It's equal parts romantic, terrifying, dreamy, sexy, and funny--and wholly unique. The first line really hooked me, and the poetic, cinematic language throughout was lovely to read. One of the best examples of atmosphere (in writing) that I've read in a long time.

Patricia McConnell, Ph.D., CAAB is an Ethologist and Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist who has consulted with cat and dog lovers for over twenty years. She combines a thorough understanding of the science of behavior with years of practical, applied experience. Her nationally syndicated radio show, Calling All Pets, played in over 110 cities for fourteen years. She is the behavior columnist for The Bark magazine ( the New Yorker of Dog Magazines ) and a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Comparative Psychology. She is Adjunct Associate Professor in Zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, teaching "The Biology and Philosophy of Human/Animal Relationships." My new puppy didn't have a full-blown case of SA. But she barked incessantly everytime I left her alone in the house, which needless to say drove the neighbors nuts. By following the techniques in this book, I was able to replace the habit of barking with the habit of chewing on a specific treat - a kong filled with peanut butter in her case - so that now she actually looks forward to my leaving the house. It wasn't a change that happened over night. It took about a month to train her, but it was well worth it. The advice in this book is incredible, but it does require patience, especially if your dog is already displaying behavioral problems (such as chewing on things in the house or barking).
I think this book is helpful for anyone who has guilty feelings when leaving their dog alone. Whether your dog has behavoiral problems or not, this book can give you advice on how to turn your daily departure from the house into a positive experience.

Useful only for certain populations

It pains me to give anything by Patricia McConnell less than 5 stars. However, after adopting my beagle mix, who turned out to have strong separation anxiety, this little volume was not immediately useful for my situation.

Key to this program is the ability to leave your dog with someone (or leave someone with your dog :) while working in the tiniest increments imaginable to desensitize (and perhaps counter-condition) your dog to your absence. Both leaving my dog with human company and counter-conditioning her (given her fear was so extreme she would not think of eating) did not work out for me. Thanks to the Web, I was able to find advice better suited to my circumstance. When I had no choice but to leave her for longer periods, I used one location. When I was actively working with her, I used a different location. I also implemented an "independence" program of rewarding any voluntary efforts on my dog's part to be somewhere other than glued to me.

Later, when with the help of medication her frantic state lessened, I did actually include most of the suggestions in this book in our program. After 6 months, we were able to wean off the meds. She still doesn't enjoy seeing me go, and she is still confined to limit her powers of destruction (I give her acceptable outlets for her "need to shred") but together we have survived one of the hardest trials in doggiedom.

I do agree that the level of detail in this book is exceptional, as is the section on deciding whether your dog has SA, or other issues. But you may still need to shop around for additional advice to fit your needs.

Finally helped with separation anxiety in my shelter pup

I adopted a pit-mix from a shelter who had a SEVERE case of separation anxiety. All pitties love people (despite popular ignorance), but my girl literally could NOT be without people. Didn't matter who it was, she just couldn't be alone (even with another dog present). I was at my witts end after mutiple classes, training sessions, and very unhappy neighbors. This book finally turned the corner with helping me understand what was going on. I bought it at 3:00am one night in a panic off Amazon (with overnight shipping). It was easy to read and very helpful. It taught me what true separation anxiety was, and what it was not. I had a case of true separation anxiety. I would highly recommend this book. Below are my personal best tips below on separation anxiety and how we overcame it together (I now have the best, sweetest doggie ever!). These are in the book as well. BUY IT - it will help you, and you need the full background and ALL tips to understand what will work best for your dog (this is just what turned the corner for us).

1. Make your comings and goings uneventful and routine. Commit to practicing leaving the house for intervals of 5, 10, 30, 60 SECONDS (yes, that's right, seconds) until you are working up to 2 hours successfully. The research is right - if you can get up to 2 hours successfully alone, you are on your way.
2. Give your pup extra special treats when you are leaving the house. Frozen kong stuffed with salmon treats and banana, and a hollowed out bone filled with wet dog food and frozen worked well for us. She only gets this when I leave the house and we finally have the reaction the research said to look for - "they will be happy for you to leave because they know they are getting their special treat". This only works for food motivated dogs however.
3. For shelter dogs, think twice about crate training. It does not work for every dog. Mine chewed through (yes, that's right, THROUGH) three crates, and one was wrought iron. Yes, she is a pit so she has the jaws of life (not to be confused with lock jaw, which is a myth - do your research badrap.org). If I ever get caught in a bad car wreck she's my gal. Some dogs are happier out of a crate, but they need to be slowly entrusted with that responsibility. We ended up going this route and I purchased locks for all doors outside living area (because yes, she can open doors too - told you she was smart), so she is confined to only a few rooms in the house.
4. Get a dog walker you trust. Leaving a dog with separation anxiety home for 8-10 hours at a time initially is only going to drive you both insane.
5. (I came up with this one on my own) If you have a home phone, try calling your cell phone from you home phone and leaving it on speaker as you leave the house. This gives you a long-range two-way radio of sorts to listen to your pooch from miles away (I used to listen to her and talk to her/soothe on the way in to work). This is really only good for knowing what's going on at home while you aren't there for the time you listen. I learned that A) it will not fix the problem, and B) you have no idea what happens once you hang up. Other people recommended video feed/Skype/motion-activated video cameras. I was too cheap and not tech-saavy enough to try those options.

Whatever you do, please put in the EFFORT for your pup and don't take the dog back to the shelter/breeder/store. I've seen this happen too many times and the dog doesn't know what they did wrong. These dogs can be fixed without medication (I considered it, but felt I owed it to her to try everything else first before medicating her. If you do want to explore meds, the book gives a very in depth coverage of what's available, but also speak to your vet.). Owning a dog is a responsibility - step up to the plate and give them the best life possible! This book will help you do that.

Replete with historical tid-bits, cultural trivia, origins of different dishes that we have become used to, this is a simply marvelous piece of work that will satisfy even cynics. SEYMOUR SCHULICH, is a Canadian, self-made billionaire whose career has spanned stock brokerage, investment counseling, mining and the oil industry. He is among Canada's greatest philanthropists having donated in excess of $200 million to universities. He has also endowed libraries, medical health centers, lecture, and music halls. Practical Wisdom

This book is a collection of words of wisdom on various topics covering aspects of both personal and business life. It is backed by Schulich's credibility both as a successful businessman and an inspiring philanthropist. The topics covered include economics, people management, investment, leadership etc. Of course, the book does not cover any of these areas in depth, but the learnings shared are appropriately framed and presented in a way that can be applied. Of relevance to my investment interests, Schulich's advice include paying close attention to companies cash flows, and not investing in growth stocks as they will sooner or later stale. In addition, a key to success in business, is knowing when to say 'No' and this cannot be stressed enough. It is much easier said than done, yet this learning is so central to success.

Don't let the number of pages fool you, this book is a very quick read - a day or two. It is written in a very entertaining and concise manner. Given the little time investment in going through it, and the amount of experience and knowledge behind it, it was definitely worth reading!

Business Smarts

There are thousands of lifetime lessons in business books, each with its own stories and weave. This is one of them but what makes it standout is that (1) I read it, and (2) I got some good ideas from it.

The author is a self made billionaire and one of Canada's greatest philanthropists. It reminded me of something my Uncle Marty said when I was very young and I asked him what he did for a living. He replied that he was a finance manager for a big company but what he really wanted to be was a philanthropist. When I asked what that was and why he wanted to do that he replied that it was someone who gave away a lot of his own money to charity and if that is what he became it would mean that he was very wealthy. Unfortunately, he never became one, but Seymour Schulich did.

The book has many autobiographical anecdotes starting when he was a kid, through his summer job on to his massive wealth creation investments and businesses. He also throws in stories of people who overcame adversity to achieve uncommon success such as Katherine Graham's taking over the family business which she knew little about at age 46 after her husband's suicide. Under her tutelage the Washington Post grew to one of the most prestigious newspapers in the World. She gave much credit to here skilled managers, perseverance and a positive attitude. Schulich writes about Intel's Andrew Grove's management discipline - his ability to decide what is worth your time and effort, and what isn't, and then cut out the latter.

One of the many reinforced ideas I got was saying "no." We know this, we read about it, but we need to be reminded that we need to say no much more than we say yes. And every no is a rejection to someone, so we must be diplomatic and firm, and comfortable with the decision.

Howard Schultz approached 242 people for money over a four year period trying to make his business idea into reality. 217 of them turned him down. Today there are over 10,000 Starbucks. Persistence is needed in anything you want to accomplish.

Schulich gives five questions to ask when screening a potential deal or investment. Four of them coincide with the questions I tell my clients to ask. How much can I make? How much can I lose? How do I get my money back? Who says this deal is any good? The fifth one "Who else is in the deal?" is not much of a concern of mine, since many so called heavy hitters invest on reputation, gut and instinct without much due diligence, witness the Bernard Madoff scam. Now, if you could get a piece of a Warren Buffet deal...

Having skin in the game means having some pride of ownership in the project. When there is a personal risk or benefit, there is greater care. One of the author's axioms is that "business is a means to an end not an end in itself." Another one is "always ask the question "if this decision in wrong, is it going to be painful or fatal?" Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Wachovia, AIG, etc., etc., etc., should have asked this question before they bet the farm on subprime mortgage derivatives.

The book is chock full of great cartoons by Ted Goff. My favorite one shows someone answering the one asking the caller to hold on for ten minutes while they are transferred to the Lost Sale Department.

A no Brainer - read it

I loved the book. Seymour Schulich is an accomplished entrepreneur billionaire which is why people might listen to him.

His advice is just old fashioned common sense (which is not that common)

The book consists of 48 very short chapters. (Don't be daunted -- this is a very simple and fast read.) It is written largely as an older man's mentoring for someone who is new and going into business. As I read the various rules, I couldn't help but smile and nod in agreement with almost everything he had to say in almost every area.

The book is not only business lessons but covers lessons on finance and life. He even gets into relationships.

I found the book to be a page turner (which might seem ironic for a business book, but perhaps I am different). It contained many gems and philosophies.

It is definitely worth the read!

Adult/High School-This beautifully presented novella tracks the lives of two teens, childhood friends who have been sent to a small Chinese village for "re-education" during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Sons of doctors and dentists, their days are now spent muscling buckets of excrement up the mountainside and mining coal. But the boys-Luo and the unnamed narrator-receive a bit of a reprieve when the villagers discover their talents as storytellers; they are sent on monthly treks to town, tasked with watching a movie and relating it in detail on their return. It is here that they encounter the little seamstress of the title, whom Luo falls for instantly. When, through a series of comic and clever tricks and favors, the boys acquire a suitcase full of forbidden Western literature, Luo decides to "re-educate" the ignorant girl whom he hopes will become his intellectual match. That a bit of Balzac can have an aphrodisiac effect is a happy bonus. Ultimately, the book is a simple, lovely telling of a classic boy-meets-girl scenario with a folktale's smart, surprising bite at the finish. The story movingly captures Maoism's attempts to imprison one's mind and heart (with the threat of the same for one's body), the shock of the sudden cultural shift for "bourgeois" Chinese, and the sheer delight that books can offer a downtrodden spirit. Though these moments are fewer after the love story is introduced, teens will enjoy them at least as much as the comic and romantic strands.

This deceptively small novel has the power to bring down governments. In Mao's China, the Cultural Revolution rages, and two friends caught in the flames find themselves shuttled off to the remote countryside for reeducation. The stolid narrator occasionally comforts himself by playing the violin, and both he and more outgoing friend Luo find that they have a talent for entertaining others with their re-creations of films they have seen. A little light comes their way when they meet the stunning daughter of the tailor in the town nearby, with whom Luo launches an affair. But the real coup is discovering a cache of forbidden Western literature including, of course, Balzac that forces open their world like a thousand flowers blooming. The literature proves their undoing, however, finally losing them the one thing that has sustained them. Dai Sijie, who was himself reeducated in early 1970s China before fleeing to France, wonderfully communicates the awesome power of literature of which his novel is proof. Highly recommended. Unintended Consequences

Unintended consequences. It's what frequently happens when you try something for the first time. You know, like Dr. Frankenstein's experiment with creating life. Christopher Columbus looking for a new route to India. Alexander Graham Bell calling for Watson. Banning Books. Thalidomide. Nuclear Power. Slavery. Smoking. Deforestation. The Automobile. Almost anything you can think of comes along with unintended consequences. Some good. Some not so good. Some, terrible.

In this novel, the author demonstrates the law of unintended consequences by telling the story of two privileged young men in China during the Cultural Revolution. They are being "reeducated" in a poor village far from their homes. There, they meet a beautiful seamstress who has not been exposed to books, western music or the ways of the world. The boys set out to reeducate her, and, in so doing, woo her. One plays Mozart for her on his violin and skillfully acts out scenes from popular movies. The other reads to her from a forbidden cache of western books by Cervantes, Hugo, Tolstoy, Dumas, Flaubert, Bronte, Balzac and other luminaries.

Because the story is related in simple language, often with slapstick humor, what should be an oppressive nightmare reads like a fairytale complete with a Cinderella, two Prince Charmings and more than one wicked villain. In the end, irony prevails over passion, demagoguery, and the best intentions of the various "reeducators".

I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something

I am not a fan of this book, but I read it for a book group. Everyone else thought it was touching, suspenseful and deep. I was the lone dissenter. They read much more into the characters than I did. I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something.

Unputdownable !

Read it in one sitting within 24 hours of buying. Author has a remarkable flair for storytelling just like other recent English writers of Chinese origin Ha Jin (In the pond, Waiting) and Adeline Yen Mah (Falling Leaves, Chinese Cinderalla). Having myself grown up during adolescence in a remote part of India on a staple diet of western classics including Russian authors like Tolstoy and Chekov, I could empathise with the characters savouring Balzac in translation notwithstanding the cultural disconnect. I also felt guilty that unlike the characters of this book, two boys denounced during Mao's cultural revolution, just for having the wrong parents; I was privileged to be growing up in a free, albeit third world country with access to a decent public library in my own cozy home town. As the Econimist has rightly said in the blurb, this book is "A paean to the magic of literature" and "A true book lover's book" (pun intended). The little Seamstress had the last word in this 21st Century French novel written by a Chinese author, ..she had learnt one thing from Balzac: that a woman's beauty is a treasure beyond price !! This tells us that Dumas,Mozart,Balzac or Beethoven transcend man made national boundaries while pollinating intellectuual curiosity of adolescents of the global village.

About the Author
Emily Carlin has been a magickal practitioner for more than a decade. She is the Grey School of Wizardry's Dean of Dark Arts, specializing in defensive magick and creatures of the night, teaching magickal protection to people of all ages and skill levels. Emily also holds a BA in philosophy from Wellesley College and a JD from Seattle University School of Law, and is a member of the Washington State Bar. Carlin is a lifelong resident of Seattle, Washington.



Daniele Serra is a professional illustrator. His work has been published in Europe, Australia and the United States, and displayed at various exhibits in U.S. and Europe. He has also worked for DC Comics, Image Comics, Weird Tales magazine, and other publications.

Practical, Applicable Magick For Anyone

If you are looking for a book that can impart magickal knowledge that can be done by both beginners or experienced practitioners in real-life situations, this is it! Emily Carlin has created a reference that benefits anyone who practices magick and which will keep on being useful long after the first reading. Whether you are looking to learn more about magickal beings or develop practical skills to deal with them, this book will work for you.

I was lucky enough to attend a convention and take a workshop with Ms. Carlin ahead of DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK's official release which allowed me to see her present some of information in person as well as get a copy of the book. Her knowledge is drawn from life experiences and research, and her methods are refined not only from a broad range of study but from many years of actual application. One of the most important things Ms. Carlin emphasized in her presentation (and which is also in the book) is the fact that most of the time malevolent encounters with magickal beings are rare and that most troublesome situations can be avoided. For those rare instances when something "bad" does happen, she offers straightforward means for dealing with them.

While the encyclopedia section of creatures and entities is informative and well-indexed for reference use, I think the real benefits come from the practical section that follows. Included are exercises to develop awareness, techniques for learning to develop and use your own energies better, and guidelines for quick and effective ways to handle any unpleasant situations that may arise. This is a foundational text that deserves a place in every magickal library!

Defense Against the Dark Review

This is the seminal book on Defense Against Dark Arts, suitable from beginners to advanced practitioners. It covers basic techniques to advanced techniques, all kinds of negative energies and entities that we might encounter, with the remedies to thwart them. My highest recommendation.

This book is a field guide. It's practical defensive magick for people who need it, written by an author who knows her subject very well. Rating the creatures of the night gives an idea of what you are up against, and if you are able to do something about it yourself, or should run to someone who's more experienced. It does not give lengthy descriptions of lore and myth, just plain solutions for definite problems. For *real* practitioners of magick.
