China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors, by Frances Wood

Unifier or destroyer, law-maker or tyrant? China’s First Emperor (258-210 BC) has been the subject of debate for over 2,000 years. He gave us the name by which China is known in the West and, by his unification or elimination of six states, he created imperial China. He stressed the rule of law but suppressed all opposition, burning books and burying scholars alive. His military achievements are reflected in the astonishing terracotta soldiers—a veritable buried army—that surround his tomb, and his Great Wall still fascinates the world.

Despite his achievements, however, the First Emperor has been vilified since his death. This book describes his life and times and reflects the historical arguments over the real founder of China and one of the most important men in Chinese history.

From Booklist
This is the first biography of the first emperorof China, Qin Shihuangi. Westerners were largely ignorant of this enigmatic man until the discovery of thousands of terra-cotta and bronze soldiers, administrators, and animals, whichwere excavated in 1974 adjacent to his tomb. The discovery sparked foreign interest in Qin Shihuangi’s life and reign, andthe publication of this biographycoincides with the first American exhibition of the terra-cotta figures. Wood, head of the Chinese department at the British Library, reveals the emperor as a rather terrifying figure who willingly caused the deaths of tens of thousands of his subjects in pursuit of his projects, including starting the Great Wall and enforcing political and cultural unity. Hecombined cunning, ruthlessness, and military skill to unite a vast territory under his control. Yet he was undeniably a brilliant innovator and an effective ruler worthy of a prominent place in Chinese and world history, as this interesting and informative work illustrates. --Jay Freeman

Tepid at best
By Jerry Saperstein
Once upon a time, Stuart Woods could put together a readable, if lightweight story, just something adequate to pass the time with. Maybe a flght or a lazy day on the beach. Not any more. His last few Stone Barrington novels have been unbearable for me and now Woods destroys his Ed Eagle character.

I don't like divulging a lot of the plot of any book because someone else might find "Santa Fe Dead" enjoyable and I don't want to ruin for them.

To make a long story short, Ed Eagle is supposedly the top trial attorney in New Mexico. The story opens as a continuation of the last Eagle book, where his wife took off with some of his money and ultimately tried to kill him. Now she is on trial for the murder of two strangers she mistook for Eagle and his girlfriend. Barbara Eagle escapes from the courthouse in a scene that, like so many others in the book, is simply unbelievable under any circumstances. The trial narrative, what little there is, is also unbelievable as is the jury acquitting her. There is, in fact, nothing believable in the entire book. Not a single bit of the plot; not a single character.

The book is filled with gratuitous sex scenes that serve no purpose except perhaps to titillate any teenage boys who might pick the book up - which wouldn't be a wise idea because, as in the Stone Barrington series, all the characters are never more than a few paragraphs away from consuming still more alcohol.

Eagle is just so well connected. For example, though he lives in New Mexico, he has a concealed carry permit for California. The LA chief of police is his pal, which helps Woods avoid the burden of actually creating a story. Every time Eagle needs something, he just calls his pal, the chief or some other soul. Eagle never does anything - and Woods never has to actually resort to inventiveness.

Eagle's girlfriend isn't even well developed enough to be a stereotype, much less a character. But she does manage to kill a couple of people with absolutely no troublesome involvement with the law.

Eagle flies about in his airplane, which helps avoid all kinds of plot complications and little things like toting guns from place to place.

As soon as Eagle's ex-wife goes on the lam, a lawyer gets charges for escaping lifted. And the former Mrs. Eagle meets a newly minted billionaire. Within days, she marries him, but continues on her murderous ways. Yeah, truly believable.

In the meantime, Woods introduces what at first appears to be an unrelated sub-plot when a movie producer phones Eagle from Rome with a story that his wife and stepson may have been kidnapped. The guy doesn't call the police, he calls Eagle, a total stranger. Eagle finds that the wife and stepson have been murdered and is now the lawyer for Don Wells, a husband and father who doesn't appear to grieve over his loss. Perhaps it is because his dead wife is a centi-millionaire by inheritance and he stands to get it all?

Woods is a decent writer and he turns out good, if often hacknyed, dialog. But the editing is awful in this book. In the first few pages, there were errors from the merely sloppy ("lead" for "led") to the ridiculous: one of the innumerable drinks consumed starts off as bourbon, becomes scotch and than transformed into bourbon again. Later in the book, you can see where Woods or his supposed editor became so sloppy that an even that occurred two pages earlier is denied, like it never happened.

There is no real story here. Every thing is patched together by the merest coincidence instead of being the product of actual plotting and story development. There is no suspense and the characters are totally unbelievable.

As I said, Woods does write well, so if you are facing a long flight or are trapped in an airport waiting for a delayed flight or simply want to kiss a few hours goodbye forever, it is possible that you might enjoy "Santa Fe Dead". I read every page myself, more in awe of how low Woods had sunk, rather than the quality of the story.

A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice
A Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2011

In That Used to Be Us, Thomas L. Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum analyze the four major challenges we face as a country---globalization, the revolution in information technology, chronic deficits, and our pattern of energy consumption---and spell out what we need to do now to preserve American power in the world. The end of the Cold War blinded the nation to the need to address these issues seriously, and China's educational successes, industrial might, and technological prowess in many ways remind us of a time when "that used to be us." But Friedman and Mandelbaum show how America's history, when properly understood, offers a five-part formula for prosperity that will enable us to cope successfully with the challenges we face. That Used to Be Us is both a searching exploration of the American condition today and a rousing manifesto for American renewal.

Introduction: Growing Up in America
A reader might ask why two people who have devoted their careers to writing about foreign affairs—one of us as a foreign correspondent and columnist at The New York Times and the other as a professor of American foreign policy at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies—have collaborated on a book about the American condition today. The answer is simple. We have been friends for more than twenty years, and in that time hardly a week has gone by without our discussing some aspect of international relations and American foreign policy. But in the last couple of years, we started to notice some- thing: Every conversation would begin with foreign policy but end with domestic policy—what was happening, or not happening, in the United States. Try as we might to redirect them, the conversations kept coming back to America and our seeming inability today to rise to our greatest challenges.
This situation, of course, has enormous foreign policy implications. America plays a huge and, more often than not, constructive role in the world today. But that role depends on the country’s social, political, and economic health. And America today is not healthy—economically or politically. This book is our effort to explain how we got into that state and how we get out of it.
We beg the reader’s indulgence with one style issue. At times, we include stories, anecdotes, and interviews that involve only one of us. To make clear who is involved, we must, in effect, quote ourselves: “As Tom recalled . . .” “As Michael wrote . . .” You can’t simply say “I said” or “I saw” when you have a co-authored book with a lot of reporting in it.
Readers familiar with our work know us mainly as authors and commentators, but we are also both, well, Americans. That is important, because that identity drives the book as much as our policy interests do. So here are just a few words of introduction from each of us—not as experts but as citizens.Tom: I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was raised in a small suburb called St. Louis Park—made famous by the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen in their movie A Serious Man, which was set in our neighbor- hood. Senator Al Franken, the Coen brothers, the Harvard political philosopher Michael J. Sandel, the political scientist Norman Ornstein, the longtime NFL football coach Marc Trestman, and I all grew up in and around that little suburb within a few years of one another, and it surely had a big impact on all of us. In my case, it bred a deep optimism about America and the notion that we really can act collectively for the common good.
In 1971, the year I graduated from high school, Time magazine had a cover featuring then Minnesota governor Wendell Anderson holding up a fish he had just caught, under the headline “The Good Life in Minnesota.” It was all about “the state that works.” When the senators from your childhood were the Democrats Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, and Eugene McCarthy, your congressmen were the moderate Republicans Clark MacGregor and Bill Frenzel, and the leading corporations in your state—Dayton’s, Target, General Mills, and 3M—were pioneers in corporate social responsibility and believed that it was part of their mission to help build things like the Tyrone Guthrie Theater, you wound up with a deep conviction that politics really can work and that there is a viable political center in American life.
I attended public school with the same group of kids from K through 12. In those days in Minnesota, private schools were for kids in trouble. Private school was pretty much unheard of for middle-class St. Louis Park kids, and pretty much everyone was middle-class. My mom en- listed in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and my parents actually bought our home thanks to the loan she got through the GI Bill. My dad, who never went to college, was vice president of a company that sold ball bearings. My wife, Ann Friedman, was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, and was raised in Des Moines. To this day, my best friends are still those kids I grew up with in St. Louis Park, and I still carry around a mental image—no doubt idealized—of Minnesota that anchors and informs a lot of my political choices. No matter where I go—London, Beirut, Jerusalem, Washington, Beijing, or Bangalore—I’m always looking to rediscover that land of ten thousand lakes where politics actually worked to make people’s lives better, not pull them apart. That used to be us. In fact, it used to be my neighborhood.Michael: While Tom and his wife come from the middle of the country, my wife, Anne Mandelbaum, and I grew up on the two coasts—she in Manhattan and I in Berkeley, California. My father was a professor of anthropology at the University of California, and my mother, after my two siblings and I reached high school age, became a public school teacher and then joined the education faculty at the university that we called, simply, Cal.
Although Berkeley has a reputation for political radicalism, during my childhood in the 1950s it had more in common with Tom’s Minneapolis than with the Berkeley the world has come to know. It was more a slice of Middle America than a hotbed of revolution. As amazing as it may seem today, for part of my boyhood it had a Republican mayor and was represented by a Republican congressman.
One episode from those years is particularly relevant to this book. It occurred in the wake of the Soviet Union’s 1957 launching of Sputnik, the first Earth-orbiting satellite. The event was a shock to the United States, and the shock waves reached Garfield Junior High School (since renamed after Martin Luther King Jr.), where I was in seventh grade. The entire student body was summoned to an assembly at which the principal solemnly informed us that in the future we all would have to study harder, and that mathematics and science would be crucial.
Given my parents’ commitment to education, I did not need to be told that school and studying were important. But I was impressed by the gravity of the moment. I understood that the United States faced a national challenge and that everyone would have to contribute to meeting it. I did not doubt that America, and Americans, would meet it. There is no going back to the 1950s, and there are many reasons to be glad that that is so, but the kind of seriousness the country was capable of then is just as necessary now.
We now live and work in the nation’s capital, where we have seen first- hand the government’s failure to come to terms with the major challenges the country faces. But although this book’s perspective on the present is gloomy, its hopes and expectations for the future are high. We know that America can meet its challenges. After all, that’s the America where we grew up.

Facts Are Good, Solution is Weak
By Barry S. Riehle
Friedman and Mandelbaum wrote a comprehensive view of how we used to be and how fast things are changing to leave us behind most of the rest of the world. Friedman was very clear that the World is Flat 1.0 means that, with new innovations (especially technology) all countries can have the same competitive advantages now, while the US dominated in the past. Now he claims we are at Flat 2.0, which means that each individual, thanks to technology, can have equal advantages by being able to cooperate with others across the globe without ever meeting the person face-to-face. The authors give a myriad of examples.
The most important component of the authors ‘solution is education. The US can put itself back on the top, or vie for the top by teaching students to think critically and use technology (and keep learning the new technology as it is invented). This will propel the US back to being the leader in the world economy.

As a former High School physics teacher I concur with most of what the authors but not with the authors’ solution to improving education. First, the authors assume schools are failing based on several standards including international test scores. My school had an exchange with one of our administrators and the head of the Shanghai school system. The Shanghai administrator, who spent a week at our school, told our faculty that while the US had a representative sample of all schools take the international test while China only allowed students from Shanghai, their best school district, to take the test. Not surprisingly the Chinese students came in first. There are other apples-and-oranges in international testing that call into question the validity of the test comparisons. Based on that the Shanghai administrator told us that we (a suburban school) should not put much stock in the test results because he saw firsthand that we were doing an excellent job.

Second, not all schools are equal, even among public schools. Suburban schools have distinct advantages over urban schools (more money; more stable families; parents with more education, affecting the aspirations of their children) and rural schools (size matters; a full time physics teacher can devote more time to a subject than a teacher who has to teach physics, chemistry, and earth science). This does not mean that all suburban teachers are better than urban or rural ones are, but by and large the various factors add up to advantages for suburban schools.
Finally, the authors want to make teachers better by incentivizing them with some bonuses, being resigned to the fact that we won’t pay teachers commensurate with their role in society. They believe that teachers will teach regardless of low pay because the want to teach. In the real world money matters, real money not just smaller bonuses for a few. School districts who can offer higher pay have a larger pool of candidates from which they hire. In addition, many who would like to teach and may make very good teachers choose not become educators because of the student debt they have accrued. When society wants to give the teaching profession more respect, including better salaries, teaching will improve because more good candidates will choose teaching. When schools can afford to offer teachers more preparation time the teachers will become more affective. Also, when schools can afford to have a longer school year and pay teachers for working 220 days like in some countries (instead of 180 in the US) education will improve.
It is a good read. I would encourage reading "That Used to be Us" and "The Myth of America's Decline: Politics, Economics, and a Half Century of False Prophecies" by Joseph Joffe as a counter. Joffe argues that the US will not fall off the planet because the US has been in this position before and has been able to adapt and move forward. The two books together can give the reader a more balanced approach to reality.

Should be Required Reading
By Amazon Customer
I will admit from the start that I am a big fan of Thomas Friedman. I believe that he has an incredible perspective on current trends that affect all of us and projects that perspective into the future. This book continues that "tradition" and we ignore its' contents and messages at our own peril.

Having worked in higher education for over 30 years and now in k-12, I have seen the way our education system, in general, fails to prepare students for the 21st century. We are still using, for the most part, an outdated model that is an industry unto itself. Without a world class education system, how can we compete in the world that Friedman and Mandelbaum describe?

The authors paint a somewhat gloomy picture of America's future that can only be solved by radical change from the way we are doing things. They have done a good job of summarizing the problems we face because of our broken government, backwards education system and general collective failure of our citizenry to demand better. While there is nothing here that any observant citizen doesn't already suspect, their ability to succinctly define the issues and possible solutions is what makes this book notable.

This book should be required reading for every high school and college student because they are the ones who have the opportunity to fix the mess that we have left for them.

That Used to be Us
By tobias
I have always enjoyed Thomas Freedman's columns in the NY Times, so I was not surprised by the material presented in his book with Michael Mandelbaum. In fact, I was somewhat bored by the warmed over sentiments voiced in the first several score of pages in this book. Later, the authors present a wealth of statistical information, buttressed by many interviews with some economic and business leaders, concerning what we are not doing correctly in this country and what we need to rectify the present situation. I was alternately buoyed up by the myriad of creative scientific and business people cited in the book, yet ultimately depressed by the authors' condemnation of our lack of will to reverse and obvious social decline. Their remedy, expressed in the last part of the book -- that we should be more creative and make many more start ups and that unemployment can be overcome by everyone starting new businesses -- may have some merit but is hardly likely to be realized. I left the book feeling somewhat pessimistic, not only because of the aforementioned unrealizable goals cited by the authors but because I think that that they, too, are pessimistic and that they concluded the book by trying to put a good face on a bad situation. It is a worthwhile book, interesting but probably with a limited shelf life, as social issues have a way of becoming old very fast.

Review
A comprehensive tome, part self-help, part manifesto . . . conducting probing, piercing metaphysical inquiries on everything, including government, religion, the music industry -- Malcolm Venable in BLACK ISSUES BOOK REVIEW on July 2003

From the Inside Flap
The ascent of KRS-ONE (Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone) from homeless street kid to rap revolutionary to acclaimed lecturer, metaphysician, and intellectual is the stuff of Hiphop legend. With Boogie Down Productions and as a solo artist, KRS-ONE has played a crucial role throughout his career in bringing a social and political conscience to Hiphop, through such ground-breaking albums as By All Means Necessary, Criminal Minded, Edutainment, and Ghetto Music: The Blueprint Of Hiphop.

KRS-ONE is also one of the most important and relevant figures in African-American and Hiphop culture today. The keynote speaker at the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame’s historic conference in 1999 entitled "Hiphop: A Cultural Expression," KRS-ONE has organized and lectured at similar conferences at the United Nations and on campuses around the U.S., including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and UCLA. He also founded the Stop the Violence Movement, HEAL (Human Education Against Lies), served as a spokesperson for the American Library Association’s literacy programs, and his latest effort, the Temple of Hiphop, is an organization with over 25,000 members that aspires to define, promote and preserve Hiphop culture and lifestyle.

In RUMINATIONS, KRS-ONE’s very first trade book, he reflects as only he can on a remarkable range of topics, including the past, present, and future of Hiphop, the most glaring challenges facing the music industry, the undeniable influence of African-American and urban culture on mainstream America, and the discipline and knowledge needed by today’s Hiphop artists to make it in a world where the odds are stacked against them. In fluid prose imbued with unwavering honesty and humanity, KRS-ONE addresses many of the most important social and political challenges facing Americans of all colors in the 21st century.

About the Author
Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1970, KRS-ONE is widely recognized as one of Hiphop’s most respected pioneers, as well as one of its most articulate and vocal defenders. He lives with his wife and partner, Pastor Simone G. Parker, in Atlanta, GA.

we are hiphop...........
By Adebayo Olorunto
Ruminations is an oustanding book. Where there is no vision...."the people will perish." Kris gives us his vision, inspires us to awaken our own vision, and encourages us to continually increase our awareness and personal power. It's amazing that so few people realize that thought, word, and action are the fundamental tools we use to create our own unique destiny. He has been telling us this for years, as have many other great Teachers! When ya'll gonna listen!! Simple universal truths consistently applied is all we need to advance as people regardless of our differences. Most people are not able to apply this vision in their daily lives because of laziness, fear, and social conditioning. Heroes have discipline. The clarity in this book is phenomenal. For those of you who are searching for a way to liberate your soul...to express your Self and be your Self..this book will help you in your journey. Many people in our society are living day to day in a life of reaction, a life they hate, a life they never planned for, yet fell victim to someone elses plan. Because of ignorance, most people are mental slaves trapped in an endless cycle of poverty, misery and negativity/niggativity. We in Hiphop reevaluate this whole United States of America, because we don't like what we see. We have higher expectations. We expect more of ourselves than any institution in this country could ever expect of us. This is why we're dissatisfied with the performance of many individuals who call themselves "leaders." It takes more than graduate school degrees and high ranking government positions to impress the Hiphop community, let alone lead us, it takes: skills, conviction, and intellect to be held in high esteem by us. The spoken word pieces, message from Cornell West, and Hiphop lectures on the CD are an excellent addition to the book. Of course, Kris eloquently illuminates our artform of Hiphop, our strategy to break the chains of mental slavery, free our minds, and evolve into civilized human beings because after all: We decide what Hiphop is and what it isn't, not anyone else.
Peace...I too am Hiphop....Join this movement Y'all!!!!

The best book I've ever read
By Patrick Whittemore
I just finished what may be one of the most important and
impressive books I've ever read, "Ruminations" by KRS ONE.
When it finally arrived in the mail I was very excited to read
it, I'm one of KRS' biggest fans and think it is criminal just
how unappreciated he can be. I believe that he is not only
one of the great minds in hip hop but one of the most brilliant
minds period. As Digital Underground says he deserves some
heartbeat props as I'm sure hundreds of years from now his
groundbreaking and progressive philosophies will be truly
admired.
Although I've only read the book through once so far and
realize I will need a few more reads to harvest all the jewels I
can say already that this is a book that should be read by all.
I wasn't quite expecting what I got, even Tavis Smiley who
does the introduction was saying how he was blown away
by what KRS offers. The book is not anecdotal at all, it is
pretty much packed with idea after idea and is very scholarly
and serious. Don't expect an autobiography or a conversational
as-told-to book, there are funny and light moments but KRS
is really looking to inspire and provoke here rather than to
entertain.
The first part of the book and my favourite is titled Urban
Inspirational Metaphysics and includes some hardcore
philosophy teachings. He's really outlining how he thinks
we can be better people and what we need to learn and
unlearn in order to get there. There is then a big section
on the reparations issue, then one chapter each on history,
language, voting, September 11th, and then two on hip
hop. You could actually be forgiven for forgetting that KRS
is an emcee for the first three quarters of the book. The
title Ruminations is really appropriate because it is truly
KRS the philospher/theologian/motivational speaker/activist/
deep thinker speaking his mind on various issues, not just
the rapper.
The book isn't perfect. I would have welcomed a bit more
humour at times, the last chapter is actually almost his whole
first book "The Science of Rap" from 1995 reprinted. That isn't
really a problem though since it wasn't a widely distributed
book so I'm sure it will be seen for the first time by most.
Also, when discussing the self KRS is a stauch believer in mind
over matter. I think with all the recent scientific evidence
coming out about the overwhelming role genes and physiology play
in a lot of human behaviour that it would have been nice if he
dealt with that to a degree.
Bottome line, what this book will make you do is think, KRS
likes to think outside the box, make you see things in a new way.
He's a visionary and an idealist who sees the vastness of human
and societal potential and is not satisfied until that potential
is reached. As KRS said on Sex and Violence "If there's one
thing I know, if there's one thing I know, it's that the truth
can always be questioned" The perspectives offered by
Ruminations are guaranteed to shake up some of your old truths.
There's also a CD that comes with the book which includes an
intro from Dr. Cornel West and pieces of KRS lectures and some
spoken word poetry. Beautiful stuff, the more people who I
imagine being exposed to this book the more optimistic I feel
about my own future, my future as a citizen and ultimately
the future of humanity, it really is that good.

Programming Windows Services with Microsoft Visual Basic 2008, by Michael Gernaey

Get the practical reference to developing Windows services with Visual Basic 2008. Addressing the leading trend of software as a service, this guide illustrates how developers with intermediate Visual Basic skills can design and implement Web services. It addresses a critical gap in the developer literature today, showing that services can be developed with Visual Basic 2008 and are not restricted to XML-based applications or Microsoft Visual C#. Software as a service is changing the dynamic between rich and thin clients. As device types multiply, users expect always-on connectivity to link them to the robust Web and corporate applications they use on the desktop. Services, which offload data storage and processing tasks to a server, run efficiently on Web platforms on any device. Services do not need to be a complex coding task and this is the ideal resource for creating modern, service-oriented applications. It covers integration of services with other Microsoft technologies, including Microsoft BizTalk Server, Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), and Microsoft SQL ServerTM. Plus, you ll get extensive code snippets and sample applications.

Sorely Needs a New Revision
By Amazon Customer
This book probably only deserves 2 to 2.5 stars, but Amazon doesn't allow that. I rounded up to offset an unfair 1-star review. There is nothing in the description or the jacket claiming anything about web services. If that's what you're after, go back and look specifically for "web services" or WCF or ASP.NET.

As for this book, the author is clearly knowledgeable on the subject and does share some of that with the reader. That's really the end of the positives. The typos in this book start out distracting and end up damaging. The instructional text is typo-free enough to get by but don't expect to just key in the code and have it operate. Most of it won't even get through VB's on-the-fly syntax checker. For the first few chapters, anyone who is actually at the programming level that s/he should be tackling this topic can probably fix the code without help, but in later chapters it strays too far for any quick intuition to fix. You'll need to follow the extremely convoluted route of getting to the "companion site" to download the code. People like me that follow along better when keying in the code than just reading over provided code are going to have issues here.

The book presents a project in the first chapter and builds on it continuously as you move through the book. However, the beginning of chapter 6 tells you to roll back to chapter 4 code. That's all well and good, except that no expectation is ever set that you'll have any need to maintain chapter-by-chapter snapshots. It happens again in a later chapter, but by then you should have learned your lesson.

The book's organization leaves quite a bit to be desired. Everything makes sense in the order in which it is presented, but if you intend to refer back to something later, be prepared to look in a chapter with an entirely different title. The index deserves a rousing "meh", so be prepared to use your own bookmarks for subjects you'll want to revisit.

In the "Advanced Security Considerations and Communications" chapter, the author actually recommends a "security by obscurity" approach (bottom of page 228) without so much as a tiny warning about how that isn't really "securing" anything. Again, anyone reading at this level should already be aware of the futility of this method, but anyone writing at this level should also be aware of it. There is still plenty of good knowledge in this chapter about security, but that one paragraph is a major red flag.

The book begins to feel extremely rushed around chapter 12, to the point I was questioning whether or not the material was finished. Chapter 12 talks about "scheduling", which I would think of addressing a topic such as "I want to happen at, oh, say, 2 AM." Nope, nothing like that. Instead, it defines "scheduling" as "responding to events" (which I would argue isn't scheduling at all) and "polling", which is a stretch for a definition of "scheduling" and doesn't really need to be called "scheduling" because it's already called "polling", which is a much better name anyway. In short, if you see this chapter name and think this book will teach you how to set up a service to carry out a task via the traditional definition of "scheduling", then this is not the book you want.

To continue with the "rushed" theme, the next part of the same chapter talks about setting up UIs to administer your service. There are no examples of any kind on how to actually do this. I'd still say anyone reading at this level can probably figure out how to do it, but anyone who can do it probably already sees the value and doesn't need to be told to do it, so either this section should have been fully fleshed out with a how-to example (it is a how-to book, after all), or it should have been skipped entirely.

A major issue I take with the author's instructional method is in his code presentation. I'm not talking about the horrid formatting or the non-functional bits, all of which could have and should have been caught by an even minimally competent editor. I'm talking about the order in which he presents his code. He'll have you typing in function calls and accessing variables that he hasn't had you design or define yet. The immediate problem is that IntelliSense sometimes "fixes" these for you and converts what you typed into something else entirely, which can lead to confusion if you notice it happened or a serious, tough-to-find bug if you don't. The second issue with this is that you really have no idea why you're coding what you're coding, which defeats the purpose of being instructed at all. The third issue with this is that, given the horrible condition of the code in general, you can never be sure if he'll come back later and actually give you the missing code or if it's just another unfinished stub. Besides all that, calling as-yet undefined variables and functions is just bad coding practice, especially in an instructional book. The coding quality is also injured by the seemingly random mixing of Hungarian notation, camel casing, and other coding standards.

Overall, if the subject matter interests you, you have a real need or desire to acquire the knowledge, and you're already at least a somewhat experienced programmer, this book will help you. You can't tackle this book as a novice or you'll definitely end up more lost than when you started. If the concepts this book presents bore you, you might easily get lost in all the quirks and wind up learning nothing.

Disappointed
By MikeMSCE
I'm only on chapter 2 and there has already been many errors in the written code. I can't imagine how bad the other chapters will be.

Sent it back
By John M. Wargo
The product description says the book is all about creating Web Services but this is nowhere near the truth. True, it does contain a few pages on building web services, but not like described in the book.

I expected it to help me understand how to build web services in Visual Studio 2008, but even the 'Software as a Service' reference was misleading. Don't buy this book if you want to know more about Software as a Service or Web Services - you will be seriously disappointed,
