From Publishers Weekly
This talky first novel by psychotherapist Yalom ( Love's Executioner ) is set in 1882 Vienna, where Joseph Breuer, an eminent physician and mentor of Sigmund Freud, has applied his recently discovered talking cure to a woman afflicted with multiple symptoms of hysteria. But now it is Breuer who needs help, for he has become obsessed with the beautiful Anna O. although she is no longer his patient. On vacation in Venice, he is asked by Lou Salome, an imperious Russian woman, to treat German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who has threatened suicide because of her rejection. Nietzsche consults Breuer in Vienna and, after a series of subtle subterfuges, agrees to a month of daily meetings; Breuer's plan is to employ the talking cure on the bristling Nietzsche under the guise of getting the philosopher to help him with his own obsession and related depression. In this intelligent, fully imagined tale, Yalom accurately evokes the encapsulated world of Breuer and Nietzsche's sessions as well as the social and intellectual milieu of the period, but the narrative is constrained by too much telling ("Perhaps dreams can express either wishes or fears," Freud observes in a discussion with Breuer)--at the expense of showing--and a manipulated, unconvincing resolution. From Kirkus Reviews
Freud's mentor, Josef Breuer, attempts to cure Friedrich Nietzsche of suicidal despair in the clinics, cemeteries, and coffeehouses of 19th-century Vienna--in this first novel by the author of the bestselling Love's Executioner: an entertaining and highly original tale of an uncompromising friendship between two brilliant men. Distinguished physician, renowned scientist, beloved husband and father, Josef Breuer finds himself at 40 simultaneously at the crest of his professional life and near the bottom of a pit of incomprehensible despair. Cursed with nightmares, insomnia, and obsessive sexual fantasies of his former patient, Anna O. (whom he cured, miraculously if temporarily, through a new technique called ``talk therapy''), Breuer welcomes the distraction when the imperious future psychoanalyst Lou Salom‚ demands that he use talk therapy to cure the suicidal depression of her friend, Friedrich Nietzsche. Because the poverty-ridden, unknown philosopher is too proud to accept spiritual help from anyone, Breuer must somehow cure the younger man without his knowledge--but the physician welcomes the challenge, and soon solves it by posing as the patient himself and begging Nietzsche's help in relieving his own existential pain. Unable to refuse, dour Nietzsche agrees to embark on a month of daily ``talks'' with the physician. The ensuing dialogue between a man of the world and an unworldly man becomes increasingly compelling as first Breuer, then Nietzsche, uncovers his forgotten past and delves deep into his own and the other's unconscious desires and fears. Throughout, Yalom's evocation of Breuer imprisoned in a classic midlife crisis, Nietzsche stymied by his own pride, loneliness, and terror, Lou Salom‚ cracking her feminist whip, and young Sigmund Freud eagerly following each conversation's twists and turns make for a stimulating dip into the pools of 19th-century philosophy, psychology, and culture. A delectable fantasy--in which the sole disappointment is that it didn't actually occur. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Two powerful figures and the birth of a science
By N. Tsafos
"When Nietzsche Wept" is a fictional encounter between Friedrich Nietzsche, the nineteenth century philosopher, and Josef Breuer, a Viennese doctor who is one of the founders of psychoanalysis. The story takes place in 1882, when Doctor Breuer accepted to help Nietzsche fight his hemicrania and despair. What follows is a captivating story of intrigue, betrayal and the development of an intimate friendship. But the book's highlight is the dialogue between Nietzsche and Breuer, in which the author touches upon the issues of life, death, love, lust, passion and freedom.
In the process of the story, Irvin Yalom presents Nietzsche's philosophy in a portrayal that is candid and captures the complicated mystique of the brilliant philosopher. And, Dr. Yalom's story-telling is so lucid that one can fully comprehend the logic of Nietzsche's philosophy. In the end, "When Nietzsche Wept" is a window into Nietzsche's innermost thoughts and psyche.
Equally compelling is Yalom's discussion of psychoanalysis. If Nietzsche's words are half of the book's appeal, the other half has to be the development of the dialogue between Nietzsche and Breuer. The psychoanalytical method is being invented as the book progresses -- and Dr. Yalom has done an excellent job of presenting the foundations of psychoanalysis as if springing out of spontaneous dialogue between two men.
This book is not only an excellent and easy read, but also highly didactic, appealing to those interested in philosophy or psychology. But more broadly, Dr. Yalom's words have such power and applicability that no one could be left uninterested in what he has to say.

Intellectually Challenging and Personally Meaningful
By Daniel Jolley
This is one of the most intellectually stimulating, personally relevant, important books I have ever read. What a rare treat Yalom has given the world. That being said, this book may not be for everyone (but what is?). In many ways, I feel as if this novel was written just for me, and I feel sure that many other readers likewise come away feeling the book was written especially for them. Do you have to know Nietzsche in order to enjoy this book? You do not, but it will certainly appeal to you more if you do. I approached this book purely as a Nietzsche admirer, and I worried that my favorite philosopher might be portrayed poorly or unacceptably in its pages. In fact, he was not. No one can say whether this fictional treatment of Nietzsche is a true depiction of this great man, but it really does not matter. The importance of this book comes not through the descriptions of its characters, but from the meaning you as an individual take from its themes. These themes are grand and universal, the themes that Nietzsche addressed in his factual life--the meaning of life, fear of aging and death, each person's place in society, and both aloneness and loneliness. Everyone knows these themes, the emotions they stir up, the doubts they employ as daily hurdles on the living of one's life, the truly cosmic loneliness that each individual knows and combats at some point or points in his/her life. Not everyone can face these challenges or even acknowledge them; those who cannot will do well to stay away from this book.
What a joy it is to read a truly intellectually challenging work in these modern times. Don't read this book to be entertained. Read this book to seek understanding of life and your place in it. I cannot stress enough how personal the message of this book seems to be. In the final pages, Nietzsche revealed to Dr. Breuer his one great fear, and that fear was my own great fear, expressed in words that described it better than I ever could. I had to put the book down momentarily and just say "My God . . ." That gave this book incredible meaning for me. I should say that I did not come away overjoyed or overly burdened from the experience of finishing the book, but I certainly came away more in tune with my own thoughts and my own philosophy, challenged to remain steadfast in my own intellectual thoughts and pursuits, and buoyed (yet not elated) to know that at least one other person on earth has knowledge of the intellectual and emotional struggles that I sometimes resigned myself to believe were solely my own.
Please, do not start reading this book unless and until you are ready to devote yourself to it and to yourself. The first few chapters are not gripping and do not really offer a visionary glimpse of the meaning and magic of the book. The early conversations, particularly between Nietzsche and Breuer, are sometimes rather stilted and "phony." Do not be discouraged in the early stages of the read because intellectual stimulation and personal challenge await you soon thereafter, and I believe that you will find yourself hard pressed to stop reading until the very end. More importantly, the book will remain with you even after you have placed it back on the shelf. That is the greatest praise that a novel can be given.

Inspiration Through Sorrow In Old Vienna
By Scott Carpenter
Breuer and Nietzsche never met, but Dr. Yalom considers the intriguing possibilities in this novel of psychological and philosophical ideas. Dr. Yalom is a professor of phsychiatry at Stanford and a proponent of "existential psychotherapy," so he is able to create drama derived almost entirely from the emotional portraits of the characters rather than the actions and struggles of the characters in the external world. Yalom's achievement is to make the reader care about Breuer and Nietzsche as they struggle to confront (or avoid) their greatest fears and weaknesses. The reader is drawn into intimate conversation with the brilliant but unloveable Nietzsche and the gifted but ungrateful Breuer. The necessary whining is balanced by just enough action and intellectual history to propel the narrative forward. Along the way the genesis of psychotherapy and existentialism is consisely explained using dialogue from Breuer, Freud and Nietzsche as well as quotations from their actual works. But this book not about theory. The sorrow of these great men is transformed into inspiration for the reader as they struggle to embrace the wisdom of amor fati, to love one's fate. We are reminded of our own need to accept complete responsibility for our choices and to boldly face life's challenges. One need not embrace an existentialist worldview to find inspiration in such advice. Neither does the Professor preach philosophy in his drama. Rather, the reader is invited to achieve a synthesis of his own after observing the strivings of the characters. Vienna was an intellectual microcosm of Europe in the late 19th Century, so the city bcomes a character in the story, with various characters, some historical, some fictional, acting as the sounding board for Breuer's and Nietzsche's nascent philosophies. This is not a book for readers put off by lengthy dialogues, and it is short on dramatic action and romance. But for those who might enjoy urgent and intimate conversation with great minds on the verge of their greatest achievements, When Nietzsche Wept may be as therapeutic as an afternoon with close friends over cafe melange at the Cafe Landtmann.

Cakebread, Pudding & Pie, by Callie Maritz, Mari-Louis Guy

Cakebread, Pudding & Pie is a delectable compilation of recipes from brother and sister team Callie Maritz and Mari-Louis Guy. As with their first, hugely successful book – Cakes to Celebrate Love and Life – they have concentrated on baking and, while there are still many cakes and sweet things, they have also included some savoury bakes, breads, tarts and pies. There is even a chapter on gluten-free bakes, including recipes for desserts, cake and tarts. Also like Cakes, this book is a selection of the recipes they use weekly in baking for their boutique bakery, Cakebread, but they have adapted their methods to make for easy-to-use recipes that can be baked in the home kitchen. Gone are all the needless, cheffy, making-it-harder-than-it-should-be bits. Cakebread, Pudding & Pie is sure to delight and inspire the baker within and will have you coming back for more!

Shelby's Folly: Jack Dempsey, Doc Kearns, and the Shakedown of a Montana Boomtown, by Jason Kelly

In 1923, not long after oil had started gushing from northern Montana fields, declining real-estate sales in nearby Shelby were dimming the little town’s prospects of becoming the “Tulsa of the West.” Then the mayor’s son dreamed up a marketing ploy: offer to host heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey’s next fight. What began as a publicity stunt soon spiraled into a civic drama unlike any Montana had ever seen. Shelby’s Folly tells this story in full for the first time.
Against the background of boom-and-bust Montana history, the folly of Shelby’s would-be promoters unfolds in colorful detail. It took months to persuade Dempsey’s conniving manager, Jack “Doc” Kearns, to sign a $300,000 contract. With less than two months before the July 4 fight, the town still had no stadium and no accommodations for tens of thousands of expected fans. Jason Kelly describes the promoters’ desperate measures and their disastrous results, from the first inkling of the idea to the bitter end of the fifteen-round boxing match. Shelby residents identified with the underdog challenger, Tommy Gibbons, who went toe-to-toe with the champion in an atmosphere crackling with tension. A soap opera of financial intrigue and chicanery, Shelby’s Folly chronicles how Big Sky ambition and Doc Kearns’s scheming mind collided to produce one of the most preposterous series of events in boxing history.

It's Just Business

Kelly, Jason. Shelby's Folly: Jack Dempsey, Doc Kearns, and the Shakedown of a Montana Boomtown, by. Hardback: 214 pages. University of Nebraska Press (2010) ISBN-978-08032-2655

It's Just Business

Jason Kelly's Shelby's Folly is a highly entertaining slice of American history using Jack Dempsey's July 4, 1922, heavyweight title fight versus Tommy Gibbons as a backdrop for brazen American optimism, small town politics, and snake oil salesmanship. The real protagonists in this story are the small boom-and-bust town of Shelby , Montana , and Dempsey's manager, charismatic con man Doc Kearns. Shelby 's mayor, "Body" Johnson, lets the news media know that Shelby, the pretender to the title of " Tulsa of the West," is out to become the center of the American sports world. Though initially it was a publicity stunt, private citizens and business interests become enamored of the opportunity to host the fight, despite, as Kelly writes, "having no arena, no transportation, infrastructure, no restaurants, and no hotel rooms to accommodate even a fraction of the crowd."

Enter Dempsey's manager , Doc Kearns. Kearns was a former Alaskan adventurer, boxer, baseball player, taxi driver, bartender, Barbary Coast carouser, fancy dressing, champagne-drinking, fast-talking, and womanizing manager of the heavyweight champion. "Every day was New Year's eve," as one notable sportswriter referred to Kearns . He put the "ooze in schmooze," according to Kelly. His rise to the top of the fight game is a classic "only in America" story, not unlike another boxing promoter half a century later by the name of Don King. Kearns gets varied interests in the town to pony up $100,000 as the first installment on a guaranteed total of $300,000 for the privilege of hosting the fight. Somehow, the town manages to build a new 40,000 seat outdoor octagonal stadium, "transportation, infrastructure, restaurants, hotel rooms, etc."

Kelly does an admirable job in the opening chapter of setting up the fight, segues into describing the characters in the town, its history and the heroic efforts not only to get the fight, but to accommodate the fans. Dempsey, age 34, was enjoying the trappings of fame and wealth that came with the championship. Though past his prime, he was still a fearsome puncher who bored in on his opponent and rarely took a step back. "Cerebral slugger" Tommy Gibbons, age 32 and a 5-1 underdog, was a master boxer in the mold of former heavyweight champion Gentleman Jim Corbett. Confident that he had the stamina and style to beat Dempsey, Gibbons was even willing to fight without a guaranteed cut of the gate. The townsfolk of Shelby identified with and embraced the straight-arrow family man Gibbons. Even Chief Curly Bear of the local Blackfoot contingent made Gibbons an honorary member of the tribe before the fight.

Kelly also describes the fight itself in the penultimate chapter where Gibbons surprised many in giving Dempsey all he could handle. Kearns broke countless investors and four local banks before he absconded after the fight, leaving everyone but himself and Dempsey the poorer for it. As with modern day examples of cities hosting the Olympic games, Shelby 's balance sheet in the end was bright red. The town of Shelby and Tommy Gibbons, however, "went the distance."

Kelly's final chapter is a great "where-are-they-now" (or "where did they go?") wrap-up, letting the reader discover what happens to the town characters you get to know in the story. Kelly has a wonderful ironic writing style - he is a storyteller, the kind of person you would have liked to have had teaching your college history class. Describing the Shelby townspeople with fond appreciation and tossing out enough alliterations to rival Robert Louis Stevenson, Shelby's Folly is a quick read night table soap opera that you enjoy coming back to after a hard day's work. It recreates a time and place in America with just the right combination of romanticism, humor, and reality. It could easily be made into a three-act play or movie. Too bad we can't resurrect James Cagney to play Doc Kearns. Kelly's book also has twenty-three photos including Dempsey, Gibbons, the town of Shelby and its characters, and a bibliography.

And what about Kearns' bilking of the good people and four banks in Shelby ? Wasn't this just "business?" as usual? Kelly slyly slips the reasons for Kearns ' real motivation into one of the chapters, giving even more flavor to this Wild West comedy/tragedy of errors. Turns out it was personal after all.

Roaring 20's go Rural
By Pugwash
Jack Dempsey was one of the most recognizable celebrities of the Roaring 20's. His celebrity status was equal to Babe Ruth. Football was yet to become a mainstream professional sport, and pro basketball was not in existence. Boxers were at the top of athlete hero worship, and Dempsey was the heavyweight champion. The celebrity capital of such an athlete was enormous, and Dempsey had crafted a reputation for ferocity unknown since the days of John L Sullivan. His ring persona, and his pulverizing punches bought huge crowds to his fights.

His promoter, Doc Kearns was part con-man, and may have been the original party animal. His roguish charm helped him sell almost promotion that struck his fancy, and with Jack Dempsey lined up in his stable, the ante was massive.

Shelby, Montana was a small western outpost in the middle of an oil bubble. It's civic leadership felt that a heavyweight title promotion would bring the town into public consciousness and create a boom that would make its inhabitants wealthy. With that in mind, they brought in Doc Kearns to negotiate a fight against a skilled, veteran fighter named Tommy Gibbons. Kearns negotiated a $300,000 guarantee for Dempsey, and the city set about building a 40,000 seat stadium to host the fight. For 1923, the stadium was quite modern.

The fight was in financial trouble from the start, and Kearns threatened to pull his fighter from the card several times. If Kearns vs the Civic leadership of Shelby was a fight, Kearns ruthless guile against Shelby's innocence would have made Kearns a prohibitive betting favorite.

The promotion itself was a disaster. Few of the non-natives of Shelby traveled to see the fight, and ticket sales never really materialized. By the day of the fight, most of spectators were non-paying gate crashers who the meager security detail failed to stop from entering.

The drama of the fight was how Gibbons, who earned $7500, a tidy sum in 1923, but a piddling amount compared to Dempsey, would acquit himself against Dempsey's fury. He became the crowd favorite, and used his sharp boxing skills to become the first fighter to last 15 rounds against Dempsey.

This is a rich Roaring 20's story detailing the vivid characters of a rollicking period of our history. It is well told by the author, but could be described even more colorfully.

Dempsey and Kearns were both very colorful people, and where the author fails is in understating their appeal. Still, a worthwhile boxing read.

More of a good story than a boxing book
By Peter
While this is listed as a boxing book, boxing is a side issue to the main story.

Shelby was a small town in Montana in 1923 who decided that they wanted to be bigger and prosperous. How could they do this quickly? Claim to be bidding for the biggest sporting event in the world at the time, the World's Heavyweight Championship.

The bid organisers had no real prospect of raising the $300,000 as well as paying for the facilities that would be required to feed and house an influx of maybe 100,000 people into a small town but they hoped that the resulting publicity from the failed bid would be enough to get the town some name recognition.

Little did they know that the bid would be accepted and they would actually be duty bound to find the money and organise the event in record time.

This is the story of big dreamers from a little town. It is the story of Jack Kearns who was the manager of Jack Dempsey. It is the story of people with good intentions making some terrible mistakes.

This is a good book, it reads well and the author has the ability to keep one entertained.

Managed (VIP Book 2), by Kristen Callihan

It started off as a battle of wits. Me: the ordinary girl with a big mouth against Him: the sexy bastard with a big...ego.

I thought I’d hit the jackpot when I was upgraded to first class on my flight to London.

That is until HE sat next to me. Gabriel Scott: handsome as sin, cold as ice. Nothing and no one gets to him. Ever. He’s a legend in his own right, the manager of the biggest rock band in the world, and an arrogant ass who looks down his nose at me.

I thought I’d give him hell for one, long flight. I didn’t expect to like him. I didn’t expect to want him. But the biggest surprise? He wants me too. Only in a way I didn’t see coming.

If I accept his proposal, I leave myself open to falling for the one man I can’t manage. But I’m tempted to say yes. Because the real man beneath those perfect suits and that cool faade just might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. And I just might be the only one who can melt the ice around his heart.

Let the battle begin…

Sunshine and chatty girl are a match made in heaven!
By francoise
I simply adored this book ! The battle of wits between Gabriel Scott, aka Sunshine, and Sophie Darling, aka chatty girl, was total bliss! Sophie’s radiant and lively personality was in total contrast to Gabriel’s “Ice-Man” character. I enjoyed their interactions, their witty banter, the dynamics between them was so much fun! And frankly, I fell head over heels for these two irresistible characters.

Sophie works as a social media liaison, in charge of creative contents. She has been hired to help promote the biggest rock band in the world, managed by Gabriel. He is dedicated to the band, Jax, Killian, Whip and Rye are more than his long-time friends, they are his family. Gabriel is the picture perfect alpha hero, charismatic, in control and exacting. His kind of woman is quiet, dignified and discreet, definitely not Sophie’s temperament. In fact, they are perfect opposite. Sophie is a natural-born talker and a free spirit. She enjoys provoking and teasing him. He enjoys shocking her. Their relationship is complicated, but they have a natural connection that can’t be denied. I loved their interactions, the flirtation, the teasing and the realistic way their relationship progressed from cautious friendship to much deeper feelings.

Gabriel is convinced he has no capacity for relationships. But he needs Sophie to help him live for the moment. He lets her see his vulnerabilities, his loneliness. She brings him comfort and understanding. Together, they are a match made in heaven!

After reading Idol, the first installment in the VIP series, this book was one of my most anticipated read of the year. And it simply blew my mind! This is testament to Kristen Callihan’s masterful storytelling and characterization. "Managed" was such a great rollercoaster ride of emotions, perfect of sweetness and genuineness! I loved it and I can’t recommend it enough. Although it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. But I definitely recommend reading the whole series!

Fabulous Book!!
By The eBook Investigator
***FIVE SUNSHINY STARS***

HAVE MERCY!!! This book was not just a great read, but it was an experience of epic proportions. Words cannot do it justice and neither does five stars. Some reviewers have said that it even tops 'Idol,' book one of the VIP Series, but my opinion differs. It would be an impossibility for me to choose between the two because it simply wouldn't be comparing apples to apples. In 'Idol' we meet and get to know Killian, the founder and leader of the band, Kill John. We see what he endures when his best friend and band-mate attempts suicide and the impact it has on each member and the band as a whole. We experience Killian crashing into Libby's life...and front yard...for the first time. It includes a lot of the band, concerts, the lifestyle rockers live and it was a learning experience, so many things I had not thought about.

In 'Managed' we are focused on the illusive band's manager, Gabriel Scott (aka Scottie.) He's a stuffy, British gentleman who is closed off with walls of concrete erected around his heart and soul. He opens himself up to no one. He doesn't do conversations or friendships, just gives orders to those he manages and lives a solitary life, sharing his space with no one. It's sad really and he didn't have such a great life growing up. On a flight back to England he is very unhappy his reservations were not as ordered and ends up sitting next to 'chatty girl' and is irked because she won't shut up. Sophie is a sweetheart and quite unique and bright. She has no idea who she's sitting next to and their banter is laugh out loud, wipe the tears away funny.

I love the nicknames the couples gave each other in both books. It's hilarious and sweet. But most of all you are in for a treat as these two people fight like heck the attraction that sizzles between them. It is a deeply touching love story and will have you unable to put this book down.

Excerpts:
“Of course not,” he deadpans. “I’m stuck next to the one afflicted with an apparently incurable case of verbal diarrhea.” “Says the man who is socially constipated,” she quips.

My favorite of the book:
“Madam, if this death trap of a conveyance were hurtling toward the Earth in a fiery ball of doom, and your mouth on my c*@& was the last bit of sex I’d ever have the chance to receive, I’d take off my seatbelt and throw myself toward death.”

The verbal sparring never stopped and it was hilarious. What an enjoyable, fantastic read. I highly recommend this book. You will so be missing out if you don't read this book. Reading pleasure is best when series is read in order.

Funny and steamy, just another great story form Kristen Callihan!
By Jayme Joanna
4,5 stars! I love this series. All characters are to fall in love with! Great story, damaged hero, smooth-tongued and funny heroine. What's not to love? Probably just the wait for the next book!

About the plot: It started with a flight from hell. Sophie Darling is flying to London for a job interview with a small amount of information for who she will be working. She is a photographer and works in social media. When she gets upgraded to first class, couldn't believe her luck. Until the moment she has to sit next to incredibly handsome and not so happy with the company suit wearing snob.

Gabriel Scott is a manager of the biggest rock band on the world, Kill John and he hates to fly. When the seat next to him instead of being empty is occupied he is ready to explode. But the long flight gets more and more interesting when annoying woman works as a great entertainment and distraction. Who would have thought that this is just the beginning.

My thoughts: When everyone has been waiting for a book about another member of the band, Kristen Callihan gave us a book about their manager. And guess what? It was a hit!

First of all the characters. Separately and together, totally amazing. Sophie is smart, sweet but also so goofy. Her inner monologues and banter with Scottie are highly entertaining and funny to tears. Gabriel Scott is a man of control, a professional, ambitious and keeps everybody at a distance. He also frequently deny himself what he wants. But under that whole crust is loving and devoted man.

Sophie and Gabriel are making very small steps to be together, you will have to be patient. But everything is wonderfully built and developed. They have a lot interactions and slowly burn with sexual tension. The waiting for the final shot will wore you out, but they are so good together, you will not regret it. You get caught in their story from the first pages to the last.

It was also good to be part of the band again and get to know even closer members of Kill John. You can be sure that you will find out what's new with Libby and Killian and the whole gang. They all enrich the story and I can't wait to read more books about them.

My favorite thing is as Gabriel said to Sophie, Darling. She doesn't know whether he uses it as her name or endearment, but you feel it immediately. This is adorable and sensational idea. And of course Sunshine, but that you'll have to read yourself. What I highly recommend.

“I’ve never met a person I couldn’t manage.”
“Sophie Elizabeth Darling.”

Know what to expect and buy with confidence
By Jillybean
This book is fantastic! The images are spectacular, it reads like a well-written magazine article, and it provides enough information to really understand what's going on, without feeling like a textbook. It has a solid backing in scientific and practical information, and I recommend it to everyone - just know what you're getting before you buy:

1. This is a wonderful book about the human body. If you think the human body is offensive, do not buy this book. Yes, it has pictures of women giving birth. Yes, they're naked. If this offends you, I question your need for this book in the first place, but you might be happier with Watch Me Grow, which is sweet and informative, without subjecting you to the harsh reality of the human form. It would be quite a sacrifice in image quality, though. 3D ultrasound just doesn't compare to real optical photos.

2. This was not written for your 5-year-old. This book assumes that its audience already knows where babies come from. This is a fantastic book that the whole family can enjoy together, but you may not want to leave the younger ones alone with it or you'll have some serious explaining to do. The more adult sections might help with "the talk" with your teen, but if your child believes a smiling stork will fly by and drop off a new sibling, keep this book in the top cabinet with the cleaning solvents.

3. Some of the photos are old. This book has been in print for a long time. Lennart Nilsson has been doing his work for even longer. I was surprised at how many new images there were, but don't be alarmed when you see a few classics as well. No need for reservations - they are some of the most amazing.

4. You are not supporting abortion by buying this book (as implied by some 1-star reviews). It is not a gallery of dead babies, it is a gallery of life in all its glory. On pg 326 it is explicitly stated that there are "no photographs of embryos or fetuses aborted by medical or surgical means." Some of the photos are indeed from miscarriages. Of course miscarriages are very sad, but what better way to honor these poor undeveloped individuals than to immortalize them in such a spectacular setting? In a way, these unfortunate souls accomplished more benefit to society in their few weeks of life than some do in many decades.

If these five concepts do not bother you, you will fall in love with this book. It is everything a pregnancy book should be. It's a great buy not only for expectant parents, but for anyone who has ever been a fetus. Buy with confidence.

Excellent book to share with your children!
By P. Kelly
I had an earlier version of this book and it was a big hit with my four kids. I especially used it when pregnant so that my children could follow my pregnancy and the development of their sibling in utero. I could read as much or as little of the information as I needed, depending on the age and maturity of the child I was reading to. This book was part of our early sex education. I used this book with my kids from the age of 2 years up to 11 years, but even after that it was something they periodically pulled off the shelf on their own and was often good conversation material for all of us.

I bought one for my daughter when she was pregnant as I had lent out my copy to someone and never received it back; she was excited to have her own. She plans on using it with my granddaughter in the future. :) I bought this one for my Sister in Law so my Nieces could follow the progress of their baby brother during their Mommy's pregnancy. Again it was a big hit. My Sister in Law was very happy with the book. She had seen the Nova with Lennart Nilsson's photos, but was unaware of the book. She said it was very helpful.

I see myself buying this book again and again as more of my children become parents to be.

How were you born? Find out now!
By David A Ferreira Jr.
An amazing read, one of my professors skimmed an older print of this visually stunning book. When I found "A Child is Born" on Amazon I had to purchase this!
I was also delightfully amazed at the updates to the book, plus it is hardcover!
The book is generally Sectioned out into the days and weeks of conception, all the way to the actual birth itself.
The images are also amazing, they put well lit full color microscopes in places I didn't even know existed! This book is educational to say the least, a true must have for anyone even remotely interested in human life, pregnancy, parenting, biology, or just simply science in general!

Falling for King's Fortune (Kings of California Book 3), by Maureen Child

According to airline tycoon Jackson King, business always triumphed over romance, and babies were best appreciated from afar. That was, until the beautiful stranger with whom he'd shared a mind-blowing tryst revealed he had fathered her baby daughter.

If Casey Davis thought she could drop a bombshell like that and just disappear, she didn't know Jackson. For a King would never deny his own flesh and blood. He was determined to have his daughter under his roof…even if it meant marrying a near stranger.
