Were you in on helping Claire decide what cover to go with? I love the way she keeps you involved in what she's doing. It's more personal that way. And then Ms. Thompson sent out a few teasers to whet your appetite for her lovelies and their story and you found yourself chanting, hurry hurry hurry! You almost wan ...more I just have to ask...Were you one of the readers who found out Claire was writing a new BDSM M/M romance and sat on the edge of your seat just waiting in anticipation for the release? I saw this news and I hollered out my happy thoughts and I shouted louder than the hubby did during a football play he was happy about.

While I am a very big fan of Claire's and have read a lot of her works, as a reviewer I have to be honest for our sake right? I will not play favorites as a reviewer. I give you my straightforward thoughts and allow you to go with it. So here we go...

Page one caught me and this story held me tight until I reached the end and when I got there, I wanted more. The opening scene we have a cowboy on stage showing off his fire whip demonstration. As mesmerizing as that probably is, the lead character of this story, Tyler Sutton a magazine reporter, has his mind on something else, or should I say someone else entirely. The object of his attention? Clint Darrow and he's the foreman of a cattle farm and a cowboy poet to boot! Clint had been on stage right before the fire whip demonstration and Tyler was lost in Clint's poems, especially because as we all know, poems can mean more than one thing and each person will decipher the meaning differently right? Well, Tyler sure did.

Tyler is a cowboy at heart his roots and his heart lay in Texas with his family and the farm they own. However, something drove Tyler away from all he loved to the big city of Austin. A place where he knew no one, and no one knew him and his dirty secrets. He started over by becoming a line editor for a magazine and eventually working his way up to a reporter. This is when we meet the young man. After just three months on the job he is promoted to reporter and is sent to cover the cowboy poetry and music festival taking place. He's both thrilled and let down at the idea of his first story. He expected nothing more than corny recitations by has-been or would-be cowboys and the same tired old country music standards offered in a nasal twang. Still, it was an opportunity to get his own byline and he had jumped at the chance to prove himself.

What he didn't expect to see was what he saw. And the man who caught his attention, Clint Darrow who is a Dom on a stick. This man had Tyler's whole body at attention and Tyler had to interview him. When Clint, a real cowboy with that southern hospitality, began talking, Tyler lost thought. So did I. They had a few beers and talked for a bit and Tyler did ask a few questions but then Clint turned things around and asked Tyler what he thought the poem he recited on stage meant. Tyler connected it with Dominance and submission, between a horse and master actually. This was the green light Clint needed. Shy? Nope, not Clint. He knows what he wants and he goes after it, and he wants Tyler. He sees something in Tyler that Tyler can't see. This is what most of the story is based on. That and getting the younger man to grasp his submissive side and be okay with wanting more than just a gentle romp in the hay.

Clint is a thirty-nine year old cowboy who knows who he is, and he knows what he wants. One night spent with the younger cowboy and he knew he had to have Tyler. Clint is a foreman at a ranch and has been for many years. He's good at what he does and he's respected for it, and his sexual orientation isn't a big deal to those he works with. He's done playing games and hopes to find that perfect guy to spend the rest of his life with. He's a Dom and he delivers exactly what Tyler needs. We find this out the first night they are together. It's a remarkable scene actually. Soon enough those men find themselves in the middle of a mystery. This gives them a reason to spend more than one night together. (YAY for us!) Someone is stealing containers of bull sperm off the farms in Texas and Clint and Tyler are set out to find the culprit. They do make one hell of a team both in and out of the bed.

Claire wrote an amazing m�nage scene in this story, and may I just say that she handles it with so much care that I didn't find myself jealous for any of the characters at any given point. There is just one m�nage scene so if it isn't your thing, just give it a chance. You won't be sorry.

This is about a man's quest to identify with who he really is and what he really wants and not be ashamed. Tyler is a man running from his past, himself, and from love all because he thinks something is sick wrong with him.

The focal point in many BDSM stories works on the humiliation of the slave/sub. In The Cowboy Poet you'll find that the characters have equal amounts of power within their relationship and it's a journey of love from the master to his sub and the sub to his master. This is a very strong plot driven story, the characters are amazing and so real that I'm pretty sure Ty and Clint live some place in Texas tending to their own herds of cattle and horses as partners.. The BDSM is handled with class and care and none of it is eye closing, OMG'ing, or anything of the sort. We even see a bit of C & BT going on.

Claire is class, and so are her characters. The hot Master/sub sex? Get a fan you'll need it. I love those alpha men! Clint is all alpha and when he gets in the mode? Oh my... I will say this: I was at work, on a break and reading one of the hot sex scenes and someone asked me if I was okay? I looked flushed. LOL! You bet I was!

Sexy Cowboys with BDSM Twist

Another hot story from the Mistress of m/m BDSM. I love the two guys in this, Clint with his heart of gold and the quiet, gruff exterior, and Tyler, so deliciously confused and aching for what he knows he shouldn't have...Hot sexy Texas cowboys, smokin' BDSM scenes, and the characters are beautifully realized and ring so true. Loved it!

Handled With Care

There is a difference between Claire Thompson and most of the other authors in this genre. She takes the time to create a history for her characters. We have a fuller view of them in general compared to others. Yes there is ample sex but there is enough story that it is not monotonous. This is a story that is based in having faith in yourself and accepting who you are. Well done Thompson!

A good starting point for Ancient Egyptian religion studies.

My only regret with this book was that it was far too short! However, it presented the Egyptian gods (or netjer, as the author refers to them) from a fresh, new perspective hitherto unseen in most texts pertaining to them (including most Wiccan "Egyptian" books). After so many years of poorly-researched books and manuals that used Budge or 70's romance novels as their references on the subject, it's good to see someone out there worth her salt putting effort into the matter (and amusing to see how many people imitate her pronunciations and use her definitions without giving her any credit whatsoever). This book touched me deeply, and has led me to question much of what I thought of the Egyptian belief system. For that alone, it is worth my praise. Now if she'd just write another one....

A great introduction for spiritual practice

This author has produced more updated material since The Neteru of Kemet was published, but this book is still a favorite in our household.

The book is formatted in vignettes that each include gentle visualizations which provide an excellent starting point for getting to know the Ancient Egyptian Gods on a personal level.

Readers who seek to begin a personal relationship with these Gods will find this book a helpful introduction.

Excellent Book to Start Learning About Kemet

I met Rev. Tamara Suida years ago and found her to be very knowledgable and well-qualified; you can trust the veracity of the information in this book. I have had this book since 1996 and have referred to it many times over the years. It is short but has translations of Kemetic poetry, the original names of the Kemetic deities as well as the later names (Aset is the original name of Isis, for example) and it has vignettes to meditate upon. There is also a useful bibliography and a handy glossary. It may be a short book but it is packed full of information; it is well worth the price. This book is a great introduction to the facts about ancient Kemetic (Egyptian) deities and history.

Not a good choice for educators

I'll admit - I did not read the companion book to this, because I felt that I was already sold on the theory behind "gamification" and was more interested in its practical applications. While I certainly didn't expect to be spoon-fed strategies just for the classroom, I bought this hoping it would give a general framework that could be applied in any instructional setting... Not too far off, you'd think, from the title and the blurbs that claim this book offers a step-by-step guide for "learning professionals." Unfortunately, this was misleading - the book appears to actually be aimed at those who want to literally design an educational video game rather than "gamify" an existing environment or content area. More generally, I felt that this book was in need of a good editor - there's a surprisingly high number of typos throughout (which, you know, small potatoes, but pretty unprofessional for a $50+ book), and the organization of chapters feels confusing and disordered. For instance, before the basic, universal practical components of gamification are even discussed (and they are, eventually, discussed), there's a lengthy chapter on the logistics of designing a video game that goes into detail about the various benefits of doing it in Flash or HTML 5, etc... I'm sure this information is useful to someone, but it felt completely out of place. Ultimately, I found myself disappointedly skimming and skipping huge chunks.

Essential principles by which to design, develop, and create interactive, high-impact learning experiences

In Chapters 1-12, the three co-editors - Karl Kapp, Lucas Blair, and Rich Mesch - offer brilliant explanations of (a) why it is so important to focus on gaming, (b) "Basic Elements," and (c) "Design Considerations" that must be addressed. This material also creates a context, a frame of reference, for what is then provided by eleven contributors in the chapters that follow. I was also very impressed by the quality of mini-case studies in Chapters 16-22. Essential principles of gamification are brought to life in real-world situations. With regard to definition of key terms, there are three: games, gamification, and simulation. The co-editors lump all three in a single term, "interactive learning event" or ILE.

Some of the most valuable material is provided by the contributors. Three address generic issues; the other eight focus on the aforementioned mini-case studies.

It is important to keep in mind that this is a fieldbook. The co-editors provide worksheets, examples, samples, tables, and instructions that can help readers create their own ILEs. "This book can be used as a primer or introductory text to introduce the topic of designing instructional games, gamification, and simulation, but it is primarily designed as a practical fieldbook to help teams in the midst of creating games, gamification, and simulation projects. It is the companion to the bestselling book The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-Based Methods and Strategies for Training and Education."

I commend Kapp, Blair, and Mesch on their skillful use of reader-friendly devices that include "Chapter Questions" that serve as a head's up, "Questions to Ponder," "Ensuring Success," and "Key Takeaways" as well as 27 "Tables" and two "Exhibits." These devices will facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of key material later. I always recommend highlighting of key passages (there are hundreds) and, especially with this book, keeping a notebook near at hand to record comments, questions, page references, and doodles.

Those who are thinking about or now preparing for a career in game design as well as those who have only recently embarked on one will find this book and its companion volume (i.e. The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-Based Methods and Strategies for Training and Education) of incalculable value but I think there is a much more larger constituency to which I also recommend it highly: designers of self-directed learning curricula. Another constituency consists of those who are now developing programs based on MOOCs (i.e. massive open online courses). The success of all formal and informal education depends almost entirely on the nature and extent of a student's engagement. If there is a better approach than an ILE to achieve it, I would very much like to know about it.

Given the current state of public school education in the United States, there is so much that staff and faculty members can learn from this book. That said, I am deeply grateful to Karl Kapp, Lucas Blair, Rich Mesch, and their colleagues for what I have learned from them.

I must admit this was an expensive book. But when I read it, I couldn't put it down. This is exactly what I needed to get a clear understanding of what this fairly new gamification is all about. Nice job.

The last colourful piece in The Cousins' War jigsaw - enjoyable and thought-provoking!

While other protagonists in the Cousins War series are obsessed with gaining or retaining the throne, the King's Curse is narrated by Margaret Pole, the daughter of George Duke of Clarence and the niece of Edward IV and Richard III. If you have read The Kingmaker's Daughter, you know about her tragic childhood - her mother died young, her father disappeared into the tower for treason, and her maternal aunt, wife of Richard III died broken-hearted before the Battle of Bosworth.
Margaret and her younger brother survived all this, and at the beginning of The King's Curse, she is married and banished to the country out of the new king's sight. Her brother is not so lucky, banished to the tower as a punishment for being born too close to the throne.
Margaret doesn't seem to have any ambitions to regain the throne for herself or her family. She is happy with minor royal responsibilities, such as looking after the new Spanish princess Katherine who comes to England to marry Arthur Prince of Wales. While she suffers indignities and injustices under Henry VII, she chooses to pursue a rewarding country life, looking after her lands and her people. Henry even stifles this ambition when he drives her into poverty after her husband dies. Then Henry VIII becomes king and he does not seem to have his father's craven mistrust of Margaret's heritage. She is welcomed back to the palace where she attends the beautiful young queen Katherine. When Katherine gives birth to her first son, Henry asks his beloved cousin Margaret to raise this new prince.

But the baby prince dies and the new king becomes obsessed with his own failure to sire an heir to his throne. He tests his power to the limit, violently defying his subjects, his advisers, his loyal wife and even his God as if a tantrum could get him a son. Meanwhile Margaret quietly nurtures her family of four boys and a girl, so they become powerful and influential members of court without ever admitting how close they are to the succession.

Over the years, during Katherine's downfall and the rise of Anne Boleyn, Margaret has to do some fast talking to protect her family and her lands, without being accused of treason. She narrates the horror of Henry's reign, describing a brutal tyrant who would not listen to rational argument and executed good men simply for disagreeing with him. She also describes the disastrous effect when Henry dissolves the monasteries, which worked as England's social security system, offering shelter and support to the sick and poor.

Margaret is pragmatic, with a fierce desire to live. Her death is one of the defining moments of Henry VIII's reign - he executed his cousin, the woman who had helped raise him, had raised his daughter Mary and whose sons had supported him without ever hinting that they had a comparable claim to the throne. He executed her when she was in her 60s without a trial - her death is legendary because she fought back when the executioner swung his axe.

Most books about Henry VIII focus on his personal life rather than the life of citizens during his reign - this book is the exception because even though Margaret is a peripheral member of the royal family, she describes how Henry's obsession with absolute power affected the country. This book brings home the arbitrary brutality of Henry's reign and shows the far-reaching effects of allowing certain favourites to seize land and treasures from the monasteries. It's maddening not to be able to tell Henry to concentrate on his own beautiful daughters who were both there, and both non-threatening successors to the throne. After reading this book, I wonder if the desire for a son was more about proving his manhood than securing the throne for future generations.

An enjoyable and thought-provoking read for a long time Tudor fan! While this book might end The Cousin's War, I could see some threads towards future books - I'm guessing I'll see Reginald Pole and Princess Mary again!

Good ending, not so good a protagonist.

I've been following the Cousin's War saga since the first book, and waiting eagerly for the next one - and now it's finally finished.

This book works perfectly well - naturally so - as both the last book of this saga and as a story set during her Tudor stories (it starts almost 1/3 into "The Constant Princess" and ends up to almost half of "The Boleyn Inheritance"). It talks mostly about Henry VIII's reign and his fall from the most promising prince in Christendom to a tyrant married to a child -- all while managing to make one feel for his losses.

Margaret Pole, the protagonist of the novel, lived - or rather, survived - through some of the most turbulent period of the English History, from the second half of the war of roses to the beginnings of Anglicanism. Her story is remarkable; as is everything we can safely learn about her. As someone who generally sides deeply with York, I was looking forward to it. That said, she makes a rather unsympathetic protagonist - specially if you've learned to love and care for Gregory's protagonists through (both) the series. Extremely proud, overtly conscious of her own royal blood, Margaret looks down on EVERYONE around - except, perhaps, Catherine of Aragon. Not even her beloved cousin Elizabeth (Henry's mother) is excused from her sense of self-importance and she loses no opportunity to vilify everyone she sees as an "upstart" - from Woodville's to the Boleyns, passing through the Tudors themselves and her own loyal husband.

I still cared and felt for her children and grandchildren, I admired the written ending here, but most of the time I just wanted to smack the old lady in her head - both for being arrogant and for the incredible amount of hypocrisy she shows. Naturally, in such court, it is necessary to lie and pretend, but doing so while thinking oneself better than the others was just too much for me.

Still, it's worth reading, specially if you've liked Gregory's previous works.

PS: I have a serious issue with this new setting of the reviews in which you have to choose if the plot is predictable/some twists/full of surprises. It means very little in historical fiction - and ends up making them look "bad" when they really shouldn't, but, what can I do?

Look Out Ladies!

Fine historical detail narrated from a woman's point of view. Lots of research and a careful and minutely imagined description of the lives of the rich and aristocratic class of ladies. The royal Plantagenet Lady Margaret who is the narrator has an astoundingly varied life from rich to poor to rich again and finally meeting the ultimate disfavor of Henry VIII. Many children and other ladies of the aristocracy are a constant buzz in her life. Death was a constant presence and the capricious nature of divine kingship made life even more challenging.

About the Author
Douglas A. Van Belle is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. He was the first person to have served as the president of both the Foreign Policy Analysis and the International Communication research sections in the International Studies Association. He has also served as the Editor-in-Chief of International Studies Perspectives and Foreign Policy Analysis and has conducted extensive research on media systems and information flows in international politics. He created the press freedom data set that precedes this study, to examine the effect of media freedom on international conflict, as exemplified by "Press Freedom and the Democratic Peace" (Journal of Peace Research). That initial analysis was expanded to complete Press Freedom and Global Politics (Praeger), which provides the foundation for the extension conducted here. Studies of popular media and political theory led to the undergraduate textbook, A Novel Approach to Politics, which is now in its 4th edition. Also, before returning to the analysis of media freedom with this project, he conducted a series of studies examining the relationship between information flows, disasters, and foreign aid, including Media, Bureaucracies and Foreign Aid (Palgrave: With Potter and Rioux).

For our political science 101 class we had to obtain this particular book. I would have honestly preferred a typical, stuffy, boring textbook than this. The author was trying way too hard to be funny and the silly examples given throughout the book to explain certain concepts ran a bit too long. On a few homework assignments where I used this book, it got a bit frustrating to read through all those pop-culture/random reference examples just to find a concept I was looking for in a chapter.

I personally did not like the way it was written

I had to get this book for my political science class. I personally did not like the way it was written. A little too "joking" and the author seemed to think he was really funny. I would have rather had a more classic book, but this was the professors request.

3rd edition was better

The seller gets five stars, shipping three, the book two.
Book was bought for me, and I needed it pronto. I have the third edition, and was disappointed when I received the 4th edition because it is identical to the third. The few additional sentences added to the fourth edition bring no substance to the material, just more jokes. The jokes get tiring and add to the course loads required reading. I could do without the jokes and I am sticking with my third edition for POL 111, like I said almost identical but the third edition has less to read.
Shipping was so so. Expedited shipping was used and it came the same day as books I ordered with regular delivery.
The condition was superb, kudos for the seller, disruption far exceeded expectations.
But again, the text lacked the context it advertised.
