When a doctor tells you there?s a one percent chance that an operation will result in your death, or a scientist claims that his theory is probably true, what exactly does that mean? Understanding probability is clearly very important, if we are to make good theoretical and practical choices.

In this engaging and highly accessible introduction to the philosophy of probability, Darrell Rowbottom takes the reader on a journey through all the major interpretations of probability, with reference to real-world situations. In lucid prose, he explores the many fallacies of probabilistic reasoning, such as the ?gambler?s fallacy? and the ?inverse fallacy?, and shows how we can avoid falling into these traps by using the interpretations presented. He also illustrates the relevance of the interpretation of probability across disciplinary boundaries, by examining which interpretations of probability are appropriate in diverse areas such as quantum mechanics, game theory, and genetics.

Using entertaining dialogues to draw out the key issues at stake, this unique book will appeal to students and scholars across philosophy, the social sciences, and the natural sciences.

No complaints here!
By Ariel
Arrived promptly and with the access code! Can't really complain too much. The online resources are extremely helpful. Also a little thing to know is that if you buy it new (or used with an online code) you CAN access the ebook version of it ONLINE. So you get both a physical book and an online e-book, which, is VERY convenient to have ESPECIALLY if you're "required" to bring in your text to class every week.

Good first semester book
By alaskachik17
I can honestly say this is a good book for your first semester of nursing school. I know a lot of my classmates would disagree with me, but I feel that the majority of my questions could be answered from this book. My only complaint is that sometimes this book goes in to so much detail about subjects that you'd think you were going to school to be a physician instead of a nurse. There are also a few things that contradicted what is in the current NCLEX books, but if you are actually reading all of your books, it's easy to point out what's no longer evidence based practice or current.

I like the content of the book though
By Dyon
this book is very thick and heavy!! i use it for my nursing school and it was hard for me to bring the textbook wherever i go. i wish it came in two volume sets. I like the content of the book though. they were very specific and easy to understand. i like how they give examples of scenario and what a nurse should do so. sometimes few chapters can be so dragging because to me it seems like the explanations are redundant. however i still would recommend this.

Why has cinema become so closely acquainted with the design disciplines, and vice versa? What valuable or significant experience can come out from this brotherhood, both in terms of substantial and in terms of representative means? What seems to be more promising in terms of theory making both in design and in cinema is the substantial dimension of their relationship, since it points to an essential change in our conception of existence and space: The timelessness of optic space replaced by the time-bounded experientiality of haptic space. This also brings about different theoretical elements for analysis by leaving the subject and the object aside and looking into what their relations have produced, the outcome being patterns of experience which exist somewhere between the lived and the made, i.e. being abstract and concrete at the same time. And, finally, this is where cinema becomes a poetic medium and an important tool for representing the so-called patterns. Design and Cinema: Form Follows Film is interested in seeing those patterns in terms of formal categories, thought to be representation of certain experiences. The book is organized in two parts, Discourse on Form and Film and Works on Form and Film. The first part of the book discourse is intended to give a picture of current thought on the formal categories, introduced here as, existential, narrative, structural, constructive, temporal, digital, social, and fragmental. The second part of the book presents works, conducted either in the form of workshops or films, as expressive media of the formal categories discussed in the first part. The volume presents works of Juhani Pallasmaa, Gül Kale, Ay e N.Erek, Ay e E.C. Orlandi, Andong Lu, François Penz, Marshall Deutelbaum, Ferenc Boné, Dilek Altunta , Halit Refi , Arthur Lizie, Tu yan A.Dural, Fato Adilo lu, Seçkin Kutucu, Lutz Robbers, Türker Armaner, Feride ‡içeko lu, Alex McDowell, Gül K.Erk, Joaquim Moreno, Ayd n H. Bearth: Two Earths, one race for time., by Brooks Agnew

This book is true, with use of fictional characters to help tell the story. In a white knuckle ride, the reader is chased from beginning to end. Enormous financial empires strategically move billions of dollars to take advantage of their foreknowledge of the events that are coming. The events are real. The names of these billionaires are real. Nothing has been changed to protect anyone, because they are all guilty.

As explained by Dr. Brooks Agnew on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, History Channel, and National Geographic Channel, Planet Earth is made of two planets, one very high frequency, and one low frequency, occupying the same space. Merged during the Flood of Noah, they have been rotating in harmony for nearly six thousand years. Until now.

Crafted as a trilogy of major motion pictures, this is the epic story of conflict and conquest between the five races of beings mentioned in the Book of Genesis.

The one-party presidential system breaks down, allowing a write-in candidate, Robert Riker, to be elected. Ancient powers controlling the economics and military activity of Earth are thwarted by the will of the people. Here and there, pockets of light are woven together as the ultimate conflict between the seed of Lucifer and the seed of Adam square off for the grand battle for inheritance of the Earth.

History unfolds exactly as this book tells it. The battle between good and evil happens every day on the television news, and by reading this book you will know why. You will also know why it is vital that you do something about it, starting with reading this book and then getting others to read it. We don't have much time. The race is on.

What a ride!
By Robin Landry
Talk about suspense, only the fate of the entire planet is at stake in Brook's Agnew's first work of fiction. I've read his non-fiction over the years and he's a wonderful writer, which doesn't always translate to fiction which is more of an art, but happily, Agnew pulls it off with a Clancy-like detail to his science and all things mechanical. This book starts off with the dream of one of the main character's racing accident which ended his career, but not his love of driving fast. Now he's a star on the street-racing circuit, but that's not even the main thrust of the story; what is the core of this novel is the splitting of the Earth into two separate Earths as spoken of in ancient mythology.

If I have it right, it goes like this: approximately six thousand years ago, two Earths became one. One of the Earth is temporal, made of rocks and metal, as the book puts it, the other Earth is made of a higher vibrational substance and eternal(think soul versus body). In other words, our Earth was ensouled by a higher being. Some traditions would call this higher being the Goddess Sophia/Gaia, which is what brings life to our planet. An example of an un-ensouled planet would Mars.

According to the story, the Earth is splitting, or dying if you will, and the higher self of our planet is leaving. What's amazing is that human souls are about to experience the 'Harvest', which means that a soul will go with the Earth that it vibrates with. Going with the higher vibrating Earth will mean that you will have a higher vibrating, eternal body, and get to enjoy the New Earth talked about in the Bible. Vibrating at a lower level means that you will go with the lower Earth and probably have to live under ground(which explains all of the underground cities being built around the world), like it's rumored they do on Mars because there will be no atmosphere to breath. This makes me wonder if we are breathing the soul essence of the being who inhabits a planet when we breath the atmosphere, but this is just me thinking out loud because this is the first book of a series of three, so there is a lot more information unveil.

Anyway, the author says that this is a true story told in the form of fiction and if so, we are all in for a bumpy ride. Just as a body goes through trauma with the soul leaves it. so too, the Earth might be in for some crazy weather and turbulent times. The secret to going with the higher Earth is to raise your vibration, and the way to do that is love. Find something, or someone to love like crazy, because even if this book is wrong and life will go on as it always has, you'll be sure to have a better life anyway.

Bearth , what if this earth is two earths and the seperation of those who are good and those who are evil is about to occur
By Mitch
My interest was peaked when I heard the author speaking about his new book " Bearth " as I had heard the concept of the earth splitting into two earths , one earth being of the Higher vibration frequency and other of the lower vibration frequency a long time ago . So I was very interested in reading this book which has the authors take on this event and why it will happen and how to prepare yourself for it . Brooks Agnew also mentioned in his interview that we are " in the Telestial kingdom " which also peaked my curiosity as I had at one point thought that very same thought " maybe we are in the Telestial Kingdom . So on to the book that tells a story that as I was reading it I could " see it " as a Movie , it made it far more interesting to read the book as a if it were a movie and what I mean by this is that I can get very visual when I read a story , picturing the story as it unfolds .
The story explains the cause and the reason for the earth splitting in two earths and is explained from a spiritual basis going back in time and it seems plausible .
Basically in the story we have two types of humans on this earth and one is loving , kind , and to be good and loving and kind is just their normal state of being , they do not need laws to tell them what is right and make them do the right thing , they do the right thing because that is who they are inside, they are creative and see the earth as a beautiful place filled with potential to grow and learn and create , " they could not hurt a fly " the author writes . then there is the other kind of humans who are destructive of all that is beautiful and their hearts are dark and filled with anger , jealousy and malice toward not only the other human beings but all of Gods creation . They are the forces behind the continual " battles" that destroy life and beauty and keep the human race in perpetual fear , poverty . The story takes you on a journey introducing you to colorful characters that play a major role in " fulfilling an old prophecy and their role is to save souls from being deceived into getting stuck on the lower vibration earth with the " dark " forces to being able to go to the Higher vibration earth as the shift occurs. It is really a fascinating concept that who knows may actually be truth , a truth that will give the souls of love and light hope that one day they will have a beautiful world to live on one without the heartache, pain and suffering caused by witnessing the " evil' , this would be a earth of higher vibration without living in fear or struggle to barely survive , a earth where all are treated with respect and kindness ,and love are just well, normal states of being . Indeed something that one would want to do whatever it takes to be on that earth.
I want to know more about the characters of Enoch and John , I have a feeling as the story alludes to that they are divine spiritual beings and hope the author will expand upon them in the series . I also hope there is explanation to his thinking on us being in the Telestial kingdom ,just curious about his thinking on that subject .
I read this book in about four hours and it took me a bit to process it and i am still thinking about it, it is thought provoking for sure !

Does the Earth have a soul that is about to depart with you as part of it?
By Dr. Branton K. Holmberg
Want to take a mind boggling trip into the possible future of your soul? Then Bearth is the way to do it. Brooks Agnew is nothing short of a genius in his ability to capture your imagination and take you into a deep examination of what is happening to our current situation here on earth. This book is absolutely captivating in its depiction of the characters he creates and the situations he takes them through. Its timeliness is uncanny. What is even more profound is the potential reality of what he's created here.

Being a lover of old time radio, I requested his personal narration of the book and found my self eagerly trying to make time to listen to the next portion of the book when I had to leave it to do others things. Whether you read it, or listen to it, you are in for an exceptional personal experience as Dr. Agnew leads you into an unforgettable spiritual experience. I can't wait to see where he takes me next.

The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War, by David Halberstam

"In a grand gesture of reclamation and remembrance, Mr. Halberstam has brought the war back home."
--The New York Times

David Halberstam's magisterial and thrilling The Best and the Brightest was the defining book about the Vietnam conflict. More than three decades later, Halberstam used his unrivaled research and formidable journalistic skills to shed light on another pivotal moment in our history: the Korean War. Halberstam considered The Coldest Winter his most accomplished work, the culmination of forty-five years of writing about America's postwar foreign policy.

Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu River and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures-Eisenhower, Truman, Acheson, Kim, and Mao, and Generals MacArthur, Almond, and Ridgway. At the same time, Halberstam provides us with his trademark highly evocative narrative journalism, chronicling the crucial battles with reportage of the highest order. As ever, Halberstam was concerned with the extraordinary courage and resolve of people asked to bear an extraordinary burden.

The Coldest Winter is contemporary history in its most literary and luminescent form, providing crucial perspective on every war America has been involved in since. It is a book that Halberstam first decided to write more than thirty years ago and that took him nearly ten years to complete. It stands as a lasting testament to one of the greatest journalists and historians of our time, and to the fighting men whose heroism it chronicles.

Amazon.com Review
David Halberstam's magisterial and thrilling The Best and the Brightest was the defining book for the Vietnam War. More than three decades later, Halberstam used his unrivalled research and formidable journalistic skills to shed light on another dark corner in our history: the Korean War. The Coldest Winter is a successor to The Best and the Brightest, even though in historical terms it precedes it. Halberstam considered The Coldest Winter the best book he ever wrote, the culmination of forty-five years of writing about America's postwar foreign policy.

Up until now, the Korean War has been the black hole of modern American history. The Coldest Winter changes that. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu, and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures -- Eisenhower, Truman, Acheson, Kim, and Mao, and Generals MacArthur, Almond, and Ridgway. At the same time, Halberstam provides us with his trademark highly evocative narrative journalism, chronicling the crucial battles with reportage of the highest order.

At the heart of the book are the individual stories of the soldiers on the front lines who were left to deal with the consequences of the dangerous misjudgments and competing agendas of powerful men. We meet them, follow them, and see some of the most dreadful battles in history through their eyes. As ever, Halberstam was concerned with the extraordinary courage and resolve of people asked to bear an extraordinary burden.

The Coldest Winter is contemporary history in its most literary and luminescent form, and provides crucial perspective on the Vietnam War and the events of today. It was a book that Halberstam first decided to write more than thirty years ago and that took him nearly ten years to write. It stands as a lasting testament to one of the greatest journalists and historians of our time, and to the fighting men whose heroism it chronicles.

Tributes to David Halberstam

David Halberstam died at the age of 73 in a car accident in California on April 23, 2007, just after completing The Coldest Winter. Legendary for his work ethic, his kindness to young writers, and his unbending moral spine, Halberstam had friends and admirers throughout journalism, many of whom spoke at his memorial service and at readings across the country for the release of The Coldest Winter. We have included testimonials given at his memorial service by two writers who made their reputations at the same newspaper where he won a Pulitzer Prize for his Vietnam War reporting, The New York Times:

Anna Quindlen

...David occupied a lot of space on the planet. Perhaps he felt the price he must pay for that big voice, that big reach, that big reputation, was that his generosity had to be just as large. Most of us, when we take to the road and meet admiring strangers, vow afterward to answer the note pressed into our hands or to pass along the speech we promised to the person whose daughter couldn't be there to hear it. But with the best will in the world we arrive home to deadlines, bills, kids, friends, all the demands of a busy life. We mean to be our best selves, but often we forget.

David did it. He always did it. The note, the call, the book, the advice. When I mentioned this once he dug his hands deep into the pockets of his grey flannels, set his mouth at the corners, looked down and rumbled, "Well, but it's so easy." That's nonsense. It's not easy. But it is important, and why he has been remembered with enormous affection by ordinary readers all over this country, and why each of us who live some sort of public life would do well, with all due respect to Jesus, to ask ourselves about those small encounters: what would David do? ... Dexter Filkins

...If I could use a sports metaphor--and I think David would have appreciated that--David was the pulling guard, as in a football game. The pulling guard who sweeps wide and clears the hole for the running back who runs through behind him. We reporters in Iraq were the running backs. David went first--a long time ago--and cleared the way.

In Iraq, when the official version didn't match what we were seeing on the streets of Baghdad, all we had to do--and we did it a lot--was ask ourselves: what would Halberstam have done? And then the way was clear.... Read his full tribute

June 25, 1950 The North Korean Army crosses the 38th parallel with a force of about 135,000 troops. The Republic of Korea is taken completely by surprise by the invasion and their forces are soon in full retreat. July 7, 1950 General Douglas MacArthur is officially put in command of the forces set to defend the Republic of Korea. August 1950 Relentlessly focused attacks by the North Koreans drive the ill-prepared defense forces into the country's southeast corner. The Pusan Perimeter is established as the last best hope of maintaining a toehold on the peninsula. August-Sept. 1950 The North Koreans launch assault after assault against the Pusan Perimeter, with particularly brutal fighting taking place along the Naktong River. U.S. soldiers are in constant danger of being overrun. September 15, 1950 MacArthur delivers his masterstroke with the amphibious landings at Inchon. The invasion blindsides the North Korean defenders and relieves pressure on the Pusan Perimeter. UN forces are able to drive north from Pusan and east from Inchon. By the end of September the North Korean forces are routed on all fronts, Seoul has been recaptured, and MacArthur receives permission to cross the 38th parallel. The Debacle November 1950 U.S. soldiers march deep into North Korean territory, eventually reaching the Yalu River border with China. But the first warning of a conflict with the Chinese takes place at Unsan, where the Eighth Cavalry is mauled by a surprise engagement. By the end of November Chinese Communist forces mount a major offensive at Kunuri and the Chosin Reservoir. December 1950 Overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers, UN forces are battered to positions below the 38th parallel. General Walker is killed in an accident, and General Ridgway takes over his command. General MacArthur lobbies relentlessly for attacks into China, an action that would draw China, and likely the USSR, into a full-scale war. Tensions between Truman and MacArthur escalate. January-February 1951 The Chinese reach the high-water mark of their assault. General Ridgway aggressively combats the Chinese in the fight for the central corridor, with major battles fought at Wonju, Twin Tunnels, and Chipyongni. April 11, 1951 Truman relieves General MacArthur of his duties. Raucous public outcry in support of the celebrated general further erodes Truman's popularity. The End July 27, 1953 After years of bloody stalemate, a cease-fire is signed between North Korea and the UN. The border established is very close to the original line at the 38th parallel. It is estimated that the war cost 33,000 American, 415,000 South Korean, and up to 1.5 million Chinese and North Korean lives. In the arena of U.S. foreign policy, the lessons of Korea still largely remain unlearned. The drive to Seoul, September 16-28, 1950

Reviewed by James BradyAt the heart of David Halberstam's massive and powerful new history of the Korean War is a bloody, losing battle fought in November 1950 in the snow-covered mountains of North Korea by outnumbered American GIs and Marines against the Chinese Communist Army.Halberstam's villain is not North Korea's Kim Il Sung or China's Chairman Mao or even the Soviet Union's Josef Stalin, who pulled the strings. It's the legendary general Douglas MacArthur, the aging, arrogant, politically ambitious architect of what the author calls the single greatest American military miscalculation of the war, MacArthur's decision to go all the way to the Yalu [River] because he was sure the Chinese would not come in.Much of the story is familiar. What distinguishes this version by Halberstam (who died this year in a California auto crash) is his reportorial skill, honed in Vietnam in Pulitzer-winning dispatches to the New York Times. His pounding narrative, in which GIs and generals describe their coldest winter, whisks the reader along, even though we know the ending. Most Korean War scholars agree that MacArthur's sprint to the border of great China with a Siberian winter coming on resulted in a lethal nightmare. Though focused on that mountain battle, Halberstam's book covers the entire war, from the sudden dawn attack by Kim Il Sung's Soviet-backed North Koreans against the U.S.-trained South, on June 25, 1950, to its uneasy truce in 1953. It was a smallish war but a big Cold War story: Harry Truman, Stalin and Mao, Joe McCarthy and Eisenhower, George C. Marshall and Omar Bradley, among others, stride through it. A few quibbles: there were no B-17 bombers destroyed on Wake Island the day after Pearl Harbor, as Halberstam asserts, and Halberstam gives his minor characters too much attention. At first MacArthur did well, toughing out those early months when the first GIs sent in from cushy billets in occupied Japan were overwhelmed by Kim's rugged little peasant army. MacArthur's greatest gamble led to a marvelous turning point: the invasion at Inchon in September, when he outflanked the stunned Reds. After Inchon, the general headed north and his luck ran out. His sycophants, intelligence chief Willoughby and field commander Ned Almond, refused to believe battlefield evidence indicating the Chinese Communists had quietly infiltrated North Korea and were lying in wait. The Marines fought their way out as other units disintegrated. In the end, far too late, Truman sacked MacArthur.Alive with the voices of the men who fought, Halberstam's telling is a virtuoso work of history. (Sept.)James Brady, columnist at Parade and Forbes.com, is author of several books about Korea. His latest book is Why Marines Fight (St. Martin's, Nov.).

Publicized as a bookend to The Best and the Brightest, The Coldest Winter is a fitting, if premature, conclusion to David Halberstam's illustrious career. (He died in a car accident last spring, shortly after completing the book.) Magisterial in scope, eminently readable, well researched, and even gripping at times, Coldest Winter is hailed as a book destined to become the subject's most popular history. Much of this success rests with the immediacy of Halberstam's storytelling, his gemlike portraits of the major players (particularly General MacArthur), and his close-up descriptions of the trenches. The Miami Herald accuses Halberstam of inappropriately lifting his framework from Best and Brightest to fit Coldest Winter; other reviewers note factual errors and an overly epic (and sometimes numbingly detailed) story. But in the end, Coldest Winter is not only a compelling history but a story that resounds loudly today.

Not a blow-by-blow treament of the whole war, more a study of the personalities that shaped the early conduct of it.
By tayv
If you're unfamiliar with the Korean War, you will find this an easy book to read. However, it's not a study of the war in terms of campaigns or actions taken by the belligerents, so you aren't going to get a blow-by-blow picture of how the war progressed. Rather, this is mostly a study in background and some of the primary personalities involved, with coverage of just a very few particular events tossed in. In particular, MacArthur takes a real beating in this book, which I think is utterly deserved, but there are many other books that do likewise. Some other people also get the spotlight, particularly national leaders, military commanders and American soldiers on the ground. It really is an easy read and there's plenty of information on history and policies that led to and shaped the war. On that level, it works very well, and I enjoyed the book. But if you're wanting a treatment of the military events in chronological order or by major battles, then this isn't really what you are looking for. The vast majority of the book covers the period from the start of the war (and its genesis) to the time Mac is fired, which leaves little coverage of the final two-plus years of the war. And it's from that those months that the book derives its name, a period of time in which my dad served in Korea and knows exactly what "coldest winter" means.

Very Good Political History
By CatMan
This book is a very good political history of what lead the United States into a war with Korea and why America fought there and the ramifications of ithe decisions for the years ahead. There was much to like abut this book. Halberstam can relay a story extremely well. He flows effortlessly from one character to another and rolls into how their decisions affected the overall war. I do think he was very one sided in his side of MacArthur and much of the ones under him. While MacArthur certainly made mistakes there wasn't nearly as much said about his successes as there should have been. Also nearly everyone under MacArthur was not portrayed in a very good light at all and not much mention of the good things they did to balance out things. If someone is looking for a good political history of the times then this book is excellent for that. But the reader should bear in mind that this book is a ittle one sided and much of good things the Americans did accomplish are glossed over.

when blind titans clash
By David A. Baer
From this reviewer's, anything with the late David Halberstam's name on it is ipso facto a worthy read. This aching recounting of a war no one saw coming and nearly everybody forgot is no exception.

In his introduction to the COLDEST WINTER, the author alludes to the 'colossal gaffe' of Secretary of State Dean Acheson's omission of South Korea when drawing America's Asian defense perimeter. Sadly, the Korean Conflict was to offer a strong roster of competitors for 'greatest colossal gaffe' status. Per Halberstam's statistics, the chaotic war without the title would claim 33,000 American lives alongside of 415,000 South Koreans and perhaps a million and a half Chinese and North Koreans.

Of the titans who come off badly, flailingly, blindly, Douglas MacArthur holds pride of place in Halberstam's telling. THE COLDEST WINTER complements other histories of the conflict by shining a light on an enduring tragedy: the intelligence to understand what the Chinese were willing to sacrifice for control of the peninsula was there to see. Military leaders on what would become a frigid field of battle saw it, often, but could not convince their leadership—particularly egotistic, far-away MacArthur—that it was there, right in front of them.

Halberstam is also merciless with the China hands who in his telling held on far too long to vain hopes that Chiang Kai-Shek was something other than a spent force and that an enduring Communist rule over the mainland China was a fact on the ground that would not be bombed or wished out of existence.

This decidedly non-specialist reviewer found Halberstam's narrative of 'the early Kim' fascinating in light of contemporary developments in North Korea's 'Hermit Kingdom'.

A cold winter unfailingly causes an ache in the bones. Perhaps none so deep and enduring as the ache David Halberstam recovers for our consideration and our memory in his masterful THE COLDEST WINTER.
