About the Author
Bob Mizon, MBE, is co-ordinator of the Campaign for Dark Skies. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1985, and has been associated with the Wessex Astronomical Society in various offices for many years. Since 1996, he has provided a full-time mobile planetarium service to south central England, and has taken the experience of the night sky to nearly 80,000 people, mostly schoolchildren.

The Great Depression in the words of many who lived it, without slant or interpretation. Quintessential Studs Terkel technique of letting the actors tell the story and letting the reader reach the conclusions. A must read for anyone interested in 20th century US history.

Harder for some than for others ...

Studs Terkel interviewed dozens of people for his oral history, "Hard Times." What you get is a very good overall picture of the Great Depression in America.
Terkel interviewed the rich, gangsters, southern sharecroppers, Oakies and Arkies, the rural poor, young and old (in the 1930's as well as in the 1960's when he was interviewing people.) The perceptions of the Depression by each is as individual and as varied as America itself. What struck me most, however was the inequitability of the Depression.
When I thought of the "Depression" images of soup lines and "Hoovervilles" sprang to mind. And yes, many remembered those as well. But there were several interviewees who never saw a bread line, a shanty town, or felt the sting of economic crash. To my suprise, there were even a few individuals who became RICH as a result of the Depression.
Another interesting aspect of the book (which was totally unexpected) was the reflection of the "present" while looking back at the Deperession. Terkel assembled the book in the late 1960's; as you may imagine, the social turbulence and youth culture of the day was often brought up in the various interviews ... fascinating.
All in all an interesting and engaging read - if nothing else, it certainly puts things in perspective relative to the "hard times" the nation faced in the 1930's. The book is not for everyone, but I do recommend it.

Aaron Aaronsohn gave up a distinguished career in science and, with his sister Sarah, established a secret spy network in wartime Palestine, providing the intelligence that enabled the British victory over the Turks.

Their arguments in wartime Cairo and at the Peace Conference in Paris presaged the political battles of the Middle East today. A very interesting and original book

As in a number of new books such as Jerusalem 1913: The Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict this book seeks to examine the 'seeds' of the Arab-Israeli conflict. But the approach here is quite original, in a dual biography of a leading Zionist and Arabist the roots of the conflict are drawn by those actors who worked to create the facts on the ground after the First World War. T.E. Lawrence was one of the most celebrated figures of the war who helped lead an irregular force of Arabs under the Sharif of Mecca, the Hussein family, to victory in Damascus. But Lawrence was more than a British officer, he was a lover of the Arabs and adopted their cause as his own. He drew maps granting them new countries and wanted to decide the future of the Middle East based on his Bedouin friends. But time was against him as Ibn Saud conquered Arabia and Faisal and Abdullah were ejected, eventually pushed from Damascus they found themselves in Iraq and Jordan. Only in Jordan would the legacy of Lawrence find root in a Bedouin state and a new Lawrence, Sir John Bagot Glubb, would help lead Jordan to a partial victory over Israel in 1948.

Juxtaposed with Lawrence is Aaron Aaronsohn, a Palestinian born Jew, he was a leading agronomist who desired to build a new Jewish state in Palestine. He worked to develop land purchased for Jewish pioneers. Aaronsohn saw in the British key allies of the Jews and as victors they would be the ones to help guide the Jews to statehood and safety.

The book is a series of vignettes of these two men as they lobby England to support their two causes and although originally the causes are mutually beneficial(King Faisal supported the Zionists in Palestine), eventually they become antagonistic by the 1920s.

The biggest drawback of this book is that these men are in-comparable. Aaronsohn is a Jew from a backward province, T.E Lawrence an Englishmen from the greatest power of the day. Instead the book could have compared Lawrence with Richard Mienertzhagen or Orde Wingate, both of whome were pro-Zionists and were like a T.E Lawrence for the Jews of Palestine.
Nevertheless this is a well written and interesting book.

All too often nonfiction authors spin a captivating tale based on poorly researched nonsense, relying on secondary sources with an occasional dip into a primary source composed in the only language of which the author has full command. Ronald Florence is not such an author. He is a skilled historian with a talent for painting lush portrayals of great personalities while capturing fine details that surprise the reader. A dual Biography both entertaining and enlightening

Allow me to begin with a summary and then indulge me a bit more time to discuss Lawrence. This volume is a wonderful read and I much enjoy dual biographies that develop a time and place as well as intersect events. Florence's book is most entertaining and enlightening with the emphasis placed mainly on the story of Aaron Aaronsohn and his sister Sarah. Lawrence (yes, Lawrence of Arabia) is somewhat short changed and summarized to quickly. I think Ronald Florence's objective was to market the hook to those who have interest in Lawrence literature only to introduce us to the amazing Aaronsohn family. Their support for Zionism through science and spying on behalf of the British against the Turks in WWI is simply an incredible story. I very highly recommend the book. Now let me digress for a while to say that I am a collector of T.E. Lawrence literature and purchased this book as part of that collection. My recommendation to those who want to explore Lawrence more deeply is to read two other great biographies. The first won the Pulitzer price and is A PRINCE OF OUR DISORDER, THE LIFE OF T E LAWRENCE by John E. Mack (1976) and the second by Jeremy Wilson, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, THE AUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF T E LAWRENCE. I noted that Ronald Florence referenced that Jeremy Wilson reviewed his text and made comments. Also, of note is that Jeremy Wilson and his wife Nicole own a private publishing house in England called Castle Hill Press. They have a web page and have printed several limited editions of Lawrence books, most notably the complete 1922 text of SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM which Florence mentions is his source reference. I recommend that you visit their web site and also pick up these two other volumes to really cover Lawrence in great detail. But a good place to begin is with Ronald Florence's creative and well written LAWRENCE AND AARONSHOHN. (I notice that Amazon.com has this title now at bargin price which is even all the more reason to pick it up.)

A must have!

A must have for bodyweight workouts! Each sheet has what exercise you do and the reps, it's that simple. Each page has a "daily tip of advice" that includes such topics as "On Rest Between Sets", "On Nutrition", and "On Shin Training" just as a few examples. The journal has the list of workout plans (New Blood, Veterano, Lockdown) that are taken from Convict Conditioning I. Also the book gives you an abbreviated progression chart for each of the Big Six Exercises. For a serious student of bodyweight exercises, this journal will only help you track your progress and give sound advice.

The book's last advice is "On Moving On:

All `systems'--no matter how good--are ultimately prisons. They are confining for the mind and the body. Convict Conditioning is no different. Spend time with the system, absorb what it has to teach. When the time comes for you to change your training, or develop further in a different direction, you must do so. There is no `dogma' in Convict Conditioning. Eventually all students will evolve beyond it, and build their own `system' to live in for a while."

Get the original issue, not this one

I love the original book, but this one, although it contains the same copy, is very poorly arranged and has typos that detract from it. I bought it to give as a gift, but I didn't give it, but bought the original instead. Brenda Ueland deserves better than a poorly put together version of her excellent, timeless book.

Great Book In An Unfortunate Edition

This is a great book about writing that generalizes to any creative endeavor in your life. Little of the advice given in the book is directly related to writing. Almost all of the advice applies equally well to any part of your life where you are held back by self-criticism, unrealistic expectations, and unclear thinking. Ueland's approach is honest and direct and inspiring.

Unfortunately, the BN Publishing edition - a print on demand service - is terrible. There are missing letters, missing words, odd line jumps, and other marks of a hasty electronic conversion.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in doing any creative work. But I would also urge you to buy a different edition.

A timeless book but a poor edition

Others have done a thorough job of reviewing the contents of this slim book. My review is about the context - this current BN Publishing edition could have been a gem with some care and effort. Sadly it is below par. First of all, there are many careless typos and haphazard blank lines within paragraphs throughout the book. Although this work was first published in 1938, there is no indication of its original copyright or publishing history. Apparently this publisher acquired the copyright in 2008 and cares nothing for what transpired before. Even more glaring, there is no introduction to give the contemporary reader a sense of how and why these insights have transcended time and are still important today. A short biography of the author would also have been in keeping with a book that has been around for approximately 75 years. If you purchase If You Want To Write, look into finding a different edition.

About the Author
Michael Brown was born in the Chatham Islands in 1948. He is married with two boys, living in Christchurch, New Zealand. He is a trainer and consultant in media and presentation skills. He was a reporter, director and presenter of news and current affairs programs for Television New Zealand and also worked on secondment to the BBC. As early as 10 years old, he wanted to understand this: "If there is a God, why is there so much pain in my world?" Which soon became the question that has always fascinated humanity, "What is it all about?" Or, simply, "Who am I?" From the beginning, he rejected the standard religious explanations and spent many years hunting for the answer, delving into philosophy, religion, spiritual practices, and science (particularly quantum physics). The journey was, at times, intense and painful, including incarceration in a psychiatric institution, and trekking into a remote region of the Andes to find a secret monastery. The result of that 50 year search is Finding the Field, which folds the ancient, universal truths directly into a modern story. Finding a bloody good read!

'Finding the Field' is the academics version of 'The Celestine Prophecy'.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and went onto recommend it to my local Book Discussion Book and ordered 10 more copies.
The author, Michael Brown, was pure enjoyment to read as he didn't 'dumb down' for his readers, as many authors will do. I found myself using my dictionary and really enjoyed discovering a higher vocabulary.
A completely enjoyable read and my newest 'favourite book'!
Well done, Michael Brown! Keep them coming.

Too clever for its own good?

Finding the field is an interesting story that serves as a vehicle for a life philosophy where we create our own lives and take responsibility for how it turns out. Unfortunately the story spent too much time being clever with its plot twists, and not enough time illustrating the more positive aspects of the philosophy. It is in fact a very bleak and negative story much of the time, although I understand this is in an attempt to set the context for the old man explaining the field and the secrets to life. Its clever, but I suspect it will appeal more to the "converted" than to someone not so well acquainted to Brown's philosophy. There are also some important details at the start that one needs to pick up on, if the rest of the book is to make sense. I initially found the overly flowery and descriptive manner of writing a bit off putting at first, though I later warmed to it. There is a major twist at the end of the story, but what left me somewhat disappointed was that there was really very little impression that the old man had lived a wonderful, happy, and fulfilling life that ended with great satisfaction as a result of his life "knowledge". That should have been the point of the book, but seemed to have got lost in the desire to be too clever with the plot.

Too good. This book is a must for law students and appellate attorneys!

I LOVE this book. Professor Anthon was my professor at FIU Law and at first I thought that it was a little unethical to force us to buy her own book. Today, I stand corrected. She KNOWS what she's talking about and I think that it will make my planned career as an appellate attorney a LOT EASIER! I had to leave FIU and go to a private law school due to family reasons, but chose to hang on to this book because it is worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY!

In short, 2 Thumbs up for a book that yields total value for money. I don't regret buying this book and I don't think anyone else will regret buying Professor Anthon's book either.
