"Life is short, and we have never too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are traveling the dark journey with us. Oh be swift to love, make haste to be kind." It was in the last days of December, 1882, that the first volume of Henri Fr�d�ric Amiel's "Journal Intime" was published at Geneva. The book, of which the general literary world knew nothing prior to its appearance, contained a long and remarkable Introduction from the pen of M. Edmond Scherer, the well-known French critic, who had been for many years one of Amiel's most valued friends, and it was prefaced also by a little Avertissement, in which the "Editors"--that is to say, the Genevese friends to whom the care and publication of the Journal had been in the first instance entrusted--described in a few reserved and sober words the genesis and objects of the publication. Some thousands of sheets of Journal, covering a period of more than thirty years, had come into the hands of Amiel's literary heirs. "They were written," said the Avertissement, "with several ends in view. Amiel recorded in them his various occupations, and the incidents of each day. He preserved in them his psychological observations, and the impressions produced on him by books. But his Journal was, above all, the confidant of his most private and intimate thoughts; a means whereby the thinker became conscious of his own inner life; a safe shelter wherein his questionings of fate and the future, the voice of grief, of self-examination and confession, the soul's cry for inward peace, might make themselves freely heard.

About the Author
Henri Frederic Amiel (27 September 1821 – 11 May 1881) was a Swiss philosopher, poet and critic. Born in Geneva in 1821, he was descended from a Huguenot family driven to Switzerland by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. After losing his parents at an early age, Amiel travelled widely, became intimate with the intellectual leaders of Europe, and made a special study of German philosophy in Berlin. In 1849 he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the academy of Geneva, and in 1854 became professor of moral philosophy. These appointments, conferred by the democratic party, deprived him of the support of the aristocratic party, which comprised nearly all the culture of the city. This isolation inspired the one book by which Amiel is still known, the Journal Intime ("Private Journal"), which, published after his death, obtained a European reputation. It was translated into English by Mary A. Ward at the instigation of Mark Pattison. Although modest in volume of output, Amiel's mind was of no inferior quality, and his Journal gained a sympathy that the author had failed to obtain in his life. In addition to the Journal, he produced several volumes of poetry and wrote studies on Erasmus, Madame de Stael and other writers. He died in Geneva.

This book is for the discriminating reader that appreciates virtue. I could never do it justice in these brief words. I love this work and I am very grateful that it came to be. It almost didn't since it was published after Amiel's death, by his friends to whom Amiel left his work. A very personal and beautiful journal, full of wonderful insights into Life, the nature of things, the human condition, etc. I love Amiel. What an honest man.

great book. If you read rimbaud, baudelaire, etc.

They were contemporaries. The copy I read was a first edition printed in 1897; it's a tiny book that almost looks like an old bible. The pages are goldlined, with a leather cover, and it's small enough (3.5 inches x 4 inches) to slide in your back pocket. The typeface is so small (font size 6? font size 4?) i could barely read it. I won't spoil it for you but it's certainly worth reading, and although as a diary, it was never meant for publication, nietzsche� for example, read amiel. There are, incidentally, two books. Amiel's Journal Intime volume I and volume II.

Wonderful start to a series

Ascensions was a good novel. It caught my interest right away, which is unusual for a short story. Usually, I read short stories because they are a quick read when I am bored. That wasn't the case with this book. I read it because it was entertaining. The plot was intricate, yet easy to follow. I loved the mythology aspect of the story. I've always been interested in mythology. Reading about it in a futuristic setting was definitely a treat. I didn't predict the big plot twist before it happened. It had me flabbergasted. I loved the way the book ended. I'm hoping that Persephone will be able to be with her husband now. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

This book was short (only 95 pages roughly) but it was very well written and the story was pretty suspenseful. I liked the god and space travel premises. This seems like the start of a really decent series, and I'll be looking forward to the author releasing the sequel.

Poorly printed

The book I got was a print-on-demand book, and the quality of the images was sub-par. This textbook is supposed to demonstrate ideal radiographs and technique, but the reprinted pages and images were so poor that all of the rads looked over/under-exposed. For example, the illustration of the ideal abdominal film is a black box with only a spine showing. There are many books that print-on-demand works great for, but it doesn't work great for ones where the quality of the illustrations is so important. The actual text was suitable and instructional. I wish I bought a used first edition instead of a new one.

Anthea Callen, professor-elect in the department of the history of art, University of Nottingham, was formerly research professor in the history of art, De Montfort University, Leicester. Wonderful Research and Insight!

Anthea Callen trained as a painter. She writes with a painter's insight. She also has a brilliant mind. The book is thoroughly researched. It is written with more emphasis on the materials and physical techniques of the Impressionists than on sociological or philosophical analysis. When she does go into those areas she does so with restraint and great intelligence. I give this book the highest recommendation particularly as a book for painters or for those interested in the intricacies of painting.

Best book on Impressionist painting out there!

This is the best book on Impressionist painting techniques ever written. I can see why copies go for such high prices. I saved up for six months to buy this and I was not disappointed! Well-written and profusely illustrated with artwork and photos. A wonderful addition to my art library and perfect for the art historian. If you are interested in Impressionism, this a must-have. It's not a how-to, but it does tell pretty much how they did it. EXCELLENT!

Impressive but Impractical

This is a very good book (for what it is), but it is quite a difficult read, with much content that has little practical value for most of us. It is a scholarly (i.e., academic) history of opinions and processes that informed Impressionist painting. It is undeniably impressive in its scholarship, its substantive weight, and its physical dimensions--this is a big book having large oversize pages full of single-spaced small print. Its research and detail are, I think, remarkable. Indeed it presents detail upon detail upon technical detail. It is both exhaustive and exhausting. It thoroughly covers many topics that I simply have no need or desire to know about. This is a book for art-history professors.

I had wanted to see this book for two reasons: I wanted to learn to paint like the Impressionists, and I hoped to see their paintings in superior reproductions. In each case, I was disappointed.

The quality of the reproductions is very good (more than adequate to illustrate the text's points), but NOT outstanding. And this definitely is not a how-to-paint lesson manual. If, from this book, you ever learn to paint like the Masters, it will only be indirectly, from inference rather than from clear instruction. And you will need to dig through some fairly thick and sometimes diffuse language to find information you might consider useful. In fact, many of the opinions and processes discussed in the book are contradictory--and (to her credit) the author does not offer her opinion about which ways and opinions were best.

Believe it or not, the foregoing is not meant to disparage the book per se, because it is excellent, FOR WHAT IT IS (and on those particular terms it deserves 4 stars). I have only meant to tell prospective buyers just what it is. This book was not very helpful to me, and I think it would not be very useful to most readers, including most painters and art aficionados.

I'm glad the book exists--it is a genuine scholarly achievement--and if someone were to give it to me as a gift, I'd gratefully recieve it (and I'd probably look at it once in a while). But I would not pay much to buy it. (Borrow it from a public library before deciding to buy.)

Sustainable groundwater irrigation in South Asia

This book is written for politicians, practitioners and scientists by one of the world's best groundwater hydrologists. Tushaar Shah explores the reasons for the decline in flow irrigation and the great expansion of pumped irrigation in South Asia. The author describes the present situation as one of atomistic groundwater economy which governments are unable to manage at present. Nevertheless, to secure the future of food production in South Asia, pump irrigation needs to be supplemented by viable canal irrigation. The author proposes various private and civil initiatives that should be introduced to ensure that tube well irrigation is sustainable, recognizing that groundwater potential varies a great deal between regions with alluvial aquifers and those in hard rock areas. Salt water intrusion in coastal areas and mixing of saline water from deeper layers of alluvial aquifers threaten this sustainability. The future of food production in South Asia justifies close attention to the analyzes and proposals contained in this interesting and provocative book because inadequate future food and fodder production in South Asia is bound to have a significant global impact.
