Christian entrepreneurs and business owners have told me how they struggle with the ethics of copywriting and salesmanship.
I have experienced this struggle myself.
As someone who believes that Jesus is God incarnate, that the Bible is his word, that I am saved entirely by his own merit, and that I should try to be more like him every day, I am well acquainted with the nagging suspicion that Jesus would not write copy.
My day-job as a copywriter and copy coach happens in a world of sleazy sales strategies and mendacious marketing methods. So there have been many days where I have pondered how Christians can compete—without dishonoring the Savior who bought us.
How can we sell without selling our souls?
Let me reassure you that it can be done—I’ve been making a good go of it since 2010. Not always perfectly; I’ve made false steps, and I’ve had to examine not only the practices and techniques that secular marketers take for granted, but also my own conscience and character.
But by God’s grace, I have become known for teaching a copywriting method that is both highly effective, and highly God-honoring.
I’d like to help you steer that same path.
In fact, this may surprise you, but being a Christian is actually a natural advantage to being an excellent copywriter; it’s not an impediment at all. If you’ve been struggling with the ethics of copywriting, I’m going to show you how the truth can set you free.
It starts by putting copywriting in its proper place.
We automatically think of salesmanship in terms of persuading people to buy. That's the dominant, secular view. And it makes the whole process of copywriting, marketing, and sales seem suspect. It muddies the waters when we assess not just the idea of selling, but also particular methods or techniques.
The solution is to reframe salesmanship into a biblical category.
You may be surprised to discover that there is a major Christian doctrine that salesmanship fits into perfectly—a doctrine you likely understand quite well.
In "Copywriting for Christians," I explain this biblical copywriting—and show how it naturally answers questions like, "Isn’t arousing desire for your offering playing on people’s lust and greed?"..."Is it right to evoke fear to increase the sense of urgency?"..."Doesn’t value-based pricing seem rather like using an unjustly weighted scale?"..."Can I really make 6 figures without taking more than my share?"
...And ultimately: "How can copywriting honor and glorify God?"
Grab yourself a copy of the book to find out how these questions all come together around a simple answer, provided by God in his word.

Unfortunately, many Christians have to be carefully walked through this minefield
By Perry Marshall
Quite some time ago, Bnonn Tenant contacted me to see if I might be interested in this project on some level.
My reply: “To be completely candid, if I have to talk Christians through those questions then they’re too much poodle and not enough wolverine to be entrepreneurs. Sorry, but that doesn’t appeal to me at all.”
I owe Bnonn an apology for being too dismissive at first. Though it was an honest kneejerk reaction, an "I don't have the patience to untangle the beliefs of stubborn pharisaical idealogues." I picture hours and hours of trying to overcome objections from someone who secretly prefers to just bury his talents and take no risks. Yet it's true that a lot of Christians are very open to working through some pretty murky questions AND they need a lot of help.
I sorted out most of the issues Bnonn tackles in this book long ago while I was in Amway - but it did take me quite a long time to do it.
This book is heavily slanted towards the doctrinally educated, reformed theology type person, which is probably the hardest nut to crack within the Christian spectrum. I grew up in the middle of that and it's a group of people that's almost terrified of fully engaging with the secular world. Chronically conflicted about lots of things - perpetually one foot on the gas, the other on the brake. (Some of these people have arguments about whether it's OK to feed the poor BEFORE you tell them about Jesus.) So Bnonn's heavy theological focus is appropriate.
Best chapter was the one near the end about being a Christian in business. The chapter about money and mammon was also quite good. (By the way I recommend Stephen DeSilva's book "Money and the Prosperous Soul.")
I suspect the most common struggle Christians have with copywriting is the many fine shades of what's OK vs. not OK in using manipulation to get the customer to buy. Once someone pointed out to me that when Nathan confronted King David about sleeping with Bathsheba and killing her husband Uriah, with his story of the rich man killing the poor man's lamb, he was using classic salesmanship and overt manipulation to achieve a very worthwhile end. And frankly the whole Bible is one giant book of persuasion and salesmanship through storytelling. So maybe the biggest problem is that people divide their own worlds into the ordinary vs. the spiritual when it should all be one unified thing.
The more mature you are, the more comfortable and adept you become at operating in grey areas. The ‘grey’ is scary territory for young immature Christians, but for seasoned Christians, it's absolutely essential. In most places where anyone really has an opportunity to make a difference in the world, there is never going to be one solid clear cut answer as to how to approach anything. In not accepting this, Christians have abdicated MANY important fields - the hard sciences, the social sciences, academia, marketing, media, entertainment, finance, and the music scene - and it's time to stop being fearful and black-and-white.
There's another factor that probably biased me against being interested at first, and that's that most Christians are CHEAP. The "Christian business market" is a lousy market. Christians expect workshops to cost $35, training manuals to cost $15 and CDs to cost $10. Sorry but you won't get a state of the art marketing education at those prices. I did a business workshop at my church once, and there was a lady who wanted to do spiritual business coaching. I said "Go to the secular audiences of validated buyers and pull Christians out of that crowd. Do NOT try to pull paying business customers out of the church crowd. You'll go broke trying."

Not just for Christians ...
By PM Brash
There's useful learning for everyone in this book, not just Christians. It's in the form of a manifesto about the "correct" principles to apply to copywriting - so it does not address specific copywriting techniques (e.g. how to write a landing page or formulate an email autoresponder series). Bnonn outlines a biblical model for salesmanship, as a form of leadership which is a serving role (contrary to the worldly view of leaders as, basically, the people at the top of the food chain). In other words, when you write copy, you should not think in terms of trying to persuade anyone; instead, you should think in terms of helping the reader to "make an informed decision about whether you can lead them to the vision of their future that they want". Among other issues covered in the book are: use of fear as a means to heighten urgency; pricing techniques; and to what extent Christians should be open about their Christianity in their work.

Copywriters and Business Owners - Buy this book!
By Scott A. Dennison
I've known and studied the author's work for a couple of years and knew, instinctively that he runs with a Christian spirit. So in that sense, having Bnonn write Copywriting 4 Christians is no surprise. The book is small, but weighty. It brings to fore issues that all business people have to think about and address from time to time. I found especially helpful two sections - one on the use of 'fear' in your copy and the other on 'operating openly as a Christian' in business. Safe to say there will be some quiet time devoted to how I'm doing on both issues in my work. If you're a copywriter (Christian or not), get this book. If you're a business owner who is God centered but want perspective on whether operating in the spirit would work for you or not - my advice is the same.
