So far so good....

I am through the first exercises of the book and have read a little further but decided to stop because I want to finish the exercises and reflect on my accomplishments before I move on. So far I love it. This is the first time I feel like someone "gets it". I can't afford to hire someone to help, so I've asked family for assistance and in a few months I'm back where I started. My sister doesn't understand why I have clutter and sometimes I don't either. Peter lays it all out for you in his book and assures you that there's nothing wrong with you. The way you and your family manage, not organize, your stuff is the problem.

Peter doesn't address "stuff" like most books and organizers. Instead, he asks what your family wants in life, and if the stuff you have is doing that for you. More than likely if you're reading this book, it's not!

Have you ever looked in magazines, and now pinterest, wishing for that perfect room to be in your house, but feel discouraged before you even get started and quickly give up? Me too!

Peter teaches you to look at your "stuff" differently and helps you throw out whatever excuse, fear or uncertainty you have to get started. I believe most people who have a problem with stuff are not lazy. I'm not. I am a wife, mother, commuter, full-time employee and I have to clean my own house. There isn't room for lazy, but there is room for clutter and "stuff" in the corners of my life.

You may think sitting down and reading Peter's book is a waste of time and that you should be cleaning instead. Trust me, I believe the time you invest in the book and exercises will increase your chances for success. Like we all know and Peter emphasizes, it didn't get this way in a week, so it probably won't clean up in a week. Keep going, we are!

Good Stuff

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

I love Peter Walsh on "Clean Sweep" and Oprah! I really took to heart the day he held up a stained, torn, crappy looking sewing basket and asked a lady if it accurately represented her Grandmother or her feelings for her Grandmother. The book is an expansion of what we have seen him do on TV.

This book wasn't life shattering, but reinforced some of what I have been feeling to be true over the last few years. Pointing out that sometimes we buy something with a purpose in mind, but it never seems to fulfill that purpose. To get rid of it feels like failure, wasting money; holding on to it feels like making it somehow worth the money spent. I am trying to make wiser purchases to avoid that feeling.

Family heirlooms deserve honor and respect. If they are covered in dust, at the bottom of piles, buried somewhere you don't even remember, are you treating them appropriately? What would it mean if they were never discovered again? If you keep them, take care of them. If they aren't worth the time to do that, it's time to give them up. What are you clinging to?

Clutter, dust, disorganization, guilt are weights on our body. They are a toll we pay daily.

You should love the rooms you live in.

I try to not fall into the Self-help book syndrome. But, I really like what Peter has to say, and will probably buy more by him. I definitely should re-read this book periodically to keep my rooms on track!

A MUST READ for everyone

I read this book a year ago and I have recommended it to many friends and family members. My husband read it also, he wasn't that excited to read it, but he did it for me. We tackled our clutter together and we included the kids. At the end of our two week purge project we had a huge yard sale and we were able to get rid of our storage unit rental.

I am an ANXIOUS person. My two teenagers are too. The real miracle that came from reading this book is the anxiety relief. Buying stuff, moving stuff, storing stuff, cleaning stuff, organizing stuff and sitting in the middle of piles of stuff really makes a person anxious. I didn't even realize it until my mom bought me this book. I was always telling my mom that I didn't mind having a messy house because I was focused on my kids and job. When the kids moved out I would focus on cleaning, but until then, it wasn't priority. I was wrong! Getting rid of the clutter made life for our family much better. We actually enjoyed being home.

It feels like a huge weight has been lifted!

A starting point for beginners

This book is about networks covered from a dynamical point of view. The book is divided in two parts, the first covers fundamentals on graph theory, probability, dynamics and network topologies. It is a fair introduction to such a wide set of topics. The second part is devoted to special topics and applications. I was particularly interested in two chapters: one on network synchronization and one on network control. I liked the former and did not like the latter which is a not very well connected review of the authors' results in the field. Almost 50% of over 60 references of the chapter on network control are papers from the authors. The result is a chapter that is narrow in scope and focused on the authors' experience. Another unpleasant aspect is that there are many incorrect references to equation numbers. Fortunately, often it is obvious to which equation the authors really want to refer to. Most (almost all) the figures in the book are reprinted with permission. This means that most of the results reported in the book come from other references (correctly quoted). However, when it comes to results from simulations, it is not always clear what are the conditions under which the simulations were carried out. Hopefully this can be clarified by looking up the original references, but it would be nicer if all the details were in the book. To close with a positive point, there are many references quoted (including from the authors), and that is quite helpful to the newcomer.

In Cannes SOME of the critics didn't like the movie but the movie was graced with lots of cheers by its viewers. Once again, the masses aren't right. The story is innacurate - yes! could be, but this movie isn't focused on history!

In Marie Antoinette, we entered in a camp aesthetic world - forget about the history. There is also a pair of Converse All-star among the Antoinette's shoes...

Good movie (although not terrific) and Sofia Coppola is already on another planet - she gets my attention for the fabulous camp aesthetique!
The soundtrack is wonderful also!

I bought this book - I normally buy movie books of the films I like.
I was pleased with this book! 1 and 2 star reviews for this book are not accurate! 3 stars and half is fairer. It is beautifully presented, with 2 LOVELY varnished pictures on the baby-blue hardcover. It has beautiful photos by Director Sofia, Leigh Johnson and Lance Acord - some are better than others, obviously. But I prefer a less quality photo than not have none.
There are also nice pictures from Asia Argento (Madame Du Barry), Marie Antoinette in the orchard near the Petit Trianon is marvellous. There are also sketches for the food castles and deserts. Even the very strong dustjacket is beautiful - all the lettering is engraved. The outside as seen on the picures is in powder-blue (fabric pattern) and the inside dustjacket in hot-pink.

IF YOU LIKE THE MOVIE - you'll like this book. Believe me!

Unreal Disappointment of a Book, Exquisite Movie

This is the first real flame of a review I have ever written. I must preface this with this statement: I am in awe of S. Coppola's (S.C.) film work-and this movie is no exception...Marie Antoinette (M.A.) and her interpretation of the story is truly exquisite. The costuming is what I am really interested in, with re: to this book, however. I wanted this book for so long, and finally purchased it-ordered it and received it today. I also love Rizzoli (R.)-the publisher. Who, now, I am flabbergasted at-that they even published this. I should have listened to the sage advise of the other costume-philes before me. First, the sheer scale of the book is atrociously small (especially for Rizzoli-they usually publish great big books with great big, clear, detailed photos in them), esp. for $45-which is what I paid for it where I got it); then, the photos are blurry, grainy, and lack practically any detail (in most of them-there a very few that have some detail)-you will have much better luck just watching the movie and pausing it to get more detail-it is almost like the book should have been called, "Scrapbook of the Making of M.A."; and then most of the close ups are of foods-which, don't get me wrong, are pretty, but are not even the prettiest of the foods in the movie, and even they are grainy and a little out of focus.

I am so disappointed. I can't believe that this is so incredibly expensive, so small, so blurry, and so, well, awful. And from someone (S.C. and Rizzoli) whose quality work I admire so much! There was so much beauty in the movie that could have been showcased in the book. I feel really cheated. I am actually going to take the book back, which is something I truly never, ever do. It is almost like they gave away all the gorgeous things they made for the movie, or couldn't get permission from the costumers to use the stuff they made, or something else got in the way of actually showing anything-I am not sure what happened, but it left me frustrated and sad (it is nothing like the product description says).

So, buy the amazing movie, which is a feast for the senses to be sure-filled especially with absolutely gorgeous handwork/sewing/dying/ribbonwork/wigwork/etc. to die for; as well as great music, a good story (which I think is probably more like what it would have been like (since they really were a bunch of teenagers with a ton of money-have you been to Versailles?), and save your pennies for some other coffee-table book or a period costuming book from MOMA.

It's not about ballistics!

Massaro is a great author but this book is not about ballistics. It should be comprised of interior, exterior, and terminal. This book picks some bullets and how they perform. There is no internal ballistics and don't be scared of the math (I have six others books on ballistics that took refresher courses on algebra and physics to understand.), you'll only see it a couple of times that a third grader could manage. Having read Massaro a few times, I thought he would take all that math and translate it to something the average joe could comprehend. The title should be; "How to select some new bullets."

Great book, but...

I enjoyed the book. It's a great run down of all the calibers. When I purchased the book I was hoping for some technical information on, well, Ballistics. You know, like scientific analysis and explanation. This book might be better named "bullets".

Having said that, I'm very sure I will refer back to the information in this book quite frequently.

It's so difficult to express what a blessing this book has been. I've been reading Rivera's blog for some time, and hoped for so long that she'd write a book. Finally, here it is! Rivera's connection - her intimacy - with God is readily apparent, and as I read her words, I wasn't left feeling like, "God is speaking to me." Instead, I felt like, "How I wish I knew God that well!" And I think that's God's mission here: He has used Rivera to draw me into a closer relationship with Him. As I witness her bonding moments with the Holy Spirit (who she knows so well, she doesn't even have to use the word "the" and just refers to Him/Her as "Holy Spirit"), I'm motivated with a desire to immerse myself in God's Word. I want Him to settle into my soul. I want to experience intimacy with the One who created me. It is because of Rivera's writing that I came to the realization that God really does see ME, know ME, and want ME.

I bought extra copies of this book because as I read it, I could think of so many others who needed to read it. I've been handing it out, but requesting it back so I can hand it out again! That said, I've clung tightly to my own copy and carried it with me so I can peek often at some of the words that I need to be reminded of. When life gets hairy, I can look at this book and remember immediately that God sees me and knows what I'm going through, and that there's purpose in it all.

I highly encourage you to buy a copy of this book for yourself, write in it, highlight it, and dog-ear the pages. And buy an extra one to pass to your friends. I'm sure you'll think of at least one who will benefit from it, too.

The times in my life when I've been "hooked up" with God, amazing things have happened and the complete fruits of the spirit were upon me. As of late, I've had a major disconnect and have been "stuck" in a pit that has completely taken over my life, my spirit and has affected every area of my life from my identity to my relationships. So much so, that I have completely isolated myself from everything in my life. Intimacy: into me You see has sparked a change in me to help me bridge this complete disconnect in my life. By sharing her story, Rivera Douthit not only gives you a very honest account of her own story, but also helped me take a deep hard look into my own life and helped me get back to the disciplines of getting back to God's word and allowing God to once again take center stage. I strongly recommend this book for anyone feeling "stuck" in life, it has been a tremendous blessing to me at this stage of my life.

A Concise, Still Important Introduction to the Mathematical Foundations of Population Biology

Still in print, unchanged, after forty years, Edward O. Wilson and William H. Bossert's "A Primer of Population Biology" is still a basic, important introduction to the mathematical foundations of population biology. It is replete with many examples of mathematical equations, including derivations of important equations such as the differential equation for equilibrium in the MacArthur - Wilson Theory of Island Biogeography. More than half of the book is devoted to basic concepts of population genetics, another third to basic concepts of ecology from elementary population growth to calculating r and k selection, and finally, a concluding chapter devoted to island biogeography, especially as seen through the MacArthur - Wilson Theory. Complicated concepts are explained simply via their concise prose, though potential readers should realize that this is a book that will be of interest primarily to students and scientists in population genetics, population ecology, conservation biology and related aspects of biology, including epidemiology and evolutionary paleobiology.

Excellent, short, readable primer on population biology

An excellent book for aspiring population biologists. All of the subjects are laid out simply and cleanly, the language is straightforward, and the examples are highly relevant. The questions are challenging without being impossible, and the fact that the answers are included in-line is extremely helpful for using this book to study. An excellent read. Don't be thrown off by the age of the book, the subject material is still the same at the introductory level as it was in the 70's.
