This book introduces readers to the notion of complex networks including the Internet, transportation networks, power grids, biological neural networks, and scientific cooperation networks, which provide challenges for future technological development. The recent spate of collapses in power grids and ongoing virus attacks on the Internet illustrates the need for knowledge about mathematical modeling, behavioral analysis, optimized planning and performance control in such networks. For advancement of methodologies and techniques, it has become clear that more fundamental knowledge will be needed in an engineering context about how dynamical networks work and how they can be controlled.
The book is divided into two parts: Part I consists of three chapters, presenting background information and basic materials needed to learn the subject, with a variety of exercises for illustrating fundamental concepts and familiarizing related modeling and analysis techniques. Part II contains several selected application-oriented stand-alone topics.

A starting point for beginners

This book is about networks covered from a dynamical point of view. The book is divided in two parts, the first covers fundamentals on graph theory, probability, dynamics and network topologies. It is a fair introduction to such a wide set of topics. The second part is devoted to special topics and applications. I was particularly interested in two chapters: one on network synchronization and one on network control. I liked the former and did not like the latter which is a not very well connected review of the authors' results in the field. Almost 50% of over 60 references of the chapter on network control are papers from the authors. The result is a chapter that is narrow in scope and focused on the authors' experience. Another unpleasant aspect is that there are many incorrect references to equation numbers. Fortunately, often it is obvious to which equation the authors really want to refer to. Most (almost all) the figures in the book are reprinted with permission. This means that most of the results reported in the book come from other references (correctly quoted). However, when it comes to results from simulations, it is not always clear what are the conditions under which the simulations were carried out. Hopefully this can be clarified by looking up the original references, but it would be nicer if all the details were in the book. To close with a positive point, there are many references quoted (including from the authors), and that is quite helpful to the newcomer.
