Must read for any teacher!

I read this back in college. It is an excellent history of the development of American education. I now have a "used" copy in my classroom and recommend it to any of my high school students interested in education. I wish every teacher and parent would read this book! After 20 years, it is still one of my favorite education books.

Drawing on classical and contemporary sociology, organizational psychology, and behavioral economics, Social Commitments in a Depersonalized World shows how affiliations—particularly those that involve a profound emotional component—can transcend merely instrumental or transactional ties and can even transform these impersonal bonds into deeply personal ones.

The authors study the structures of small groups, corporations, economic transactions, and modern nation-states to determine how hierarchies, task allocation, and social identities help or hinder a group’s vitality. They find that such conditions as equal status, interdependence, and overlapping affiliations figure significantly in creating and sustaining strong person-to-group bonds. Recurring collaboration with others to achieve common goals—along with shared responsibilities and equally valued importance within an organization—promote positive and enduring feelings that enlarge a person’s experience of a group and the significance of their place within it. Employees in organizations with strong person-to-group ties experience a more unified, collective identity. They tend to work more cost effectively, meet company expectations, and better regulate their own productivity and behavior.

With cultures pulling apart and crashing together like tectonic plates, much depends on our ability to work collectively across racial, cultural, and political divides. The world is rapidly changing. Can the present social order survive the changes? The authors posit that social cohesion at the macro level requires strong person-to-group commitments at the micro level--from the bottom up. But in a market-oriented social world such as ours has become, the ties of people to social units tend to be loose, unsettled, and problematic. To be significant, personal ties to groups must have an emotional component. Affective bonds of people to groups are essential to the stability of the social order because people are affective beings who think and decide and act with their emotions. What makes this book different from others of its type is its emphasis on affect, the emotional component of social commitments. "The centrality of the emotional dimension to human lives."

On the micro level, as the world becomes more depersonalized, person-to-person relationships tend to become shallower, looser, less often extending beyond the merely transactional. The result is emotional isolation. "People today are leading more individualized and privatized lives." Yeadings and his team must look in every direction, starting with the dead woman's womanizing professor husband and her distressed teenage stepdaughter. How is the star-crossed mathematician (who studies chaos theory at the roulette table) connected to the dead woman? Through his drug-damaged son? Could she have been close to---have even known the successful bookie, his family, his bodyguards? The police have good reasons for looking at all the people in this psychological merry-go-round, and another attempted murder only complicates their work, spreading the suspicion to touch even more of the town's kaleidoscope of citizens.

As always, at the center of Curzon's suspenseful and puzzling story is the likeable, reliable Yeadings, as genuine a police officer as any you might find in the English countryside. He goes after his villains armed with a mix of experience and common sense---and real-life personal problems that only add to his believability. Readers can be certain that Inspector Yeadings and his sergeants will get their prey---if only after overcoming highly suspenseful odds.

New York writer Myles's ( Not Me ) autobiographical adventures recount her volatile '60s adolescence littered with vibrant memories of an alcoholic father and her awakening as a writer in the '70s. Myles revisits her risk-filled past because she wants desperately to be understood: "It's lonely to be alive and never know the whole story. . .I would like to tell everything once, just my part, because this is my life, not yours." She views becoming a poet as a "cultural accident" and depicts her calling as she knows and loves it--a life filled with drink, drugs, sex, love, loneliness and poverty. Although her tales are highly personal, they are nonetheless rather indifferently told: Myles feels nothing because she doesn't know what to feel and consequently wanders through her life as though she were curious tourist. She erects walls between herself and her emotions that also leave the reader feeling cut off. But Myles is nothing if not honest, and her accounts of her life are so harsh that they stick with the reader as closely as they stick with her.

This series of 28 autobiographical tales reflects the various stages of the author's life. The early stories depict the pain and poignancy of a young girl's adolescence in the 1960s. Growing up in a Catholic family in Boston, the narrator witnesses the death of her alcoholic father. The later stories take place in New York during the 1970s as the narrator struggles to write poetry and assert her sexuality. Some readers will find this collection off-putting. The writing is often stream-of-consciousness, sometimes with grating grammatical mistakes. Because the tales skip back and forth in time, not much continuity is established. In addition, graphic lesbian sex and a focus on alcohol and drugs pervade most of the stories. For large fiction collections or gay literature collections only.

Beautifully written memoir...

This book is a series of stories about the author's interesting East-Village life. The stories are NOT told in chronalogical
order, but somehow seem to flow together seamlessly.
From her small, working-class town childhood in Massachusetts, to her wild teen years, to multiple rapes, [bad] summer jobs, struggling NYC artists, drug addiction, and un-healthy lesbian relationships.... Myles covers all subjects.
This book reads quickly, and is of particular interest to any young artist in NYC (or any major city.)
Oh. And, by the way, the hardcover edition is absolutely beautiful - bound in cloth and in wonderful autumn colors!

A kinder queerer Henry Miller

Eileen Myles has an incredible gift for nailing down a moment, or for that matter, a sweep of years. Each image is carefully chosen and tacked into place, and what rises is the edifice of a life. The metaphor is probably too static. Myles's prose is exhilarating even at its bleakest, it's full of breathless speed. There's plenty that is bleak here--a sad alcoholic father who dies before his daugher's eyes; an awful, floundering gang-rape; poverty, drugs, booze, ambition thwarted and bitterly fulfilled. It's the great American sadness, and it would be unbearable if Myles didn't write with such wit, elegance, and an utter lack of self-pity. The writer that comes to mind is Henry Miller, but a Henry Miller who didn't hate women.
